Max Verstappen een 'speciaal project' volgens Xevi Pujolar

Voormalig Toro Rosso-engineer Xevi Pujolar heeft zich andermaal positief uitgelaten over zijn voormalig pupil Max Verstappen. Verstappen en Pujolar werkten ruim anderhalf jaar samen. Pujolar werd na zijn ontslag bij Toro Rosso opgepikt door het team van Sauber. Volgens Pujolar was het 'speciaal' om Max Verstappen klaar te stomen voor het echte werk.

Na de bevestiging door Red Bull dat Max Verstappen in 2015 Formule 1 zou gaan rijden had Toro Rosso en half jaar om de toen nog maar zestienjarige Nederlander voor te bereiden op zijn debuut in de koningsklasse. Volgens Pujolar vergde dit een speciale benadering maar stond men al vrij snel verbaasd te kijken hoe snel Verstappen de grote hoeveelheid informatie tot zich nam.

"We staken heel veel tijd in het opleiden van Max Verstappen. Niet alleen ik, maar ook de monteurs die aan zijn auto zouden gaan werken. We wilden voor het eerste seizoen vooral vertrouwen voor Max creeëren. Al snel kreeg ik veel vertrouwen in Verstappen en ook zijn vader Jos is een prima vent. Ik heb een hele goede band opgebouwd in de korte tijd dat ik met Max Verstappen heb samen mogen werken", aldus Pujolar.

Pujolar gaat verder nog in op de manier waarop men Verstappen de informatie aanbood: "Het opleiden van de coureur ging wat anders dan normaal. Het ging om een hele andere benadering. We moesten in detail uitleggen wat hij precies moest doen. In een half jaar tijd moesten we hem ervaring op laten bouwen voor meerdere jaren. Het voelde alsof we een kind moesten laten leren lopen."

Volgens Pujolar was het niet altijd gezellig in de garage, zeker niet wanneer Max Verstappen wat tegenslag kende. Volgens Pujolar heeft dit ook te maken met een stukje ongeduld van de jonge Nederlander: "Het was niet altijd even leuk hoor ! Zeker wanneer er een probleem met de auto was of Max had zelf een fout gemaakt, was de spanning soms om te snijden. Dat laat zien hoeveel Max Verstappen bezig is met winnen. Hij wil altijd de beste zijn. Is ook hard naar zichzelf. Als Max een fout had gemaakt dan liet ik ook wel merken dat ik er niet blij mee was. Gelukkig maakt hij zo weinig fouten dat ik niet heel snel uit hoefde te vallen tegen hem."

Mooi toch? Ik heb zelf een hekel aan,,,vaak goed tot zeer goed betaalde,, topsporters die hun schouders ophalen of ongeintreseerd zijn als ze verliezen of iets niet goed is/gaat... Voor mij is de enige juiste instelling dat je vreselijk de pest in moet hebben bij verlies en/of pech of fouten... (je moet alleen uitkijken dat je het niet op de verkeerde manier afreageert)

  Ben het met je eens Bschuit maar dat sommige hun frustraties uiten en andere niet wil niet persé zeggen dat ze ongeïnteresseerd zijn, je hebt ook mensen die in zichzelf keren en dus niet hun frustraties verbaal of fysiek uiten.
  Al is dat niet bepaald amusant voor de buitenwacht.

  Toch leuk om eens iets van Xevi te lezen over Max, want die twee waren
  een ijzersterk team. Jammer dat ze niet meer samenwerken.
  Van zijn huidige engineer Lambiase hoor en zie je nooit iets, zelfs niet op
  de vele foto's die op allerlei websites staan. Vreemd.
