Dave Ryan: "Manor heeft in 2016 laten zien dat we thuishoren in de Formule 1"

Hoewel Manor sportief gezien niet het jaar had waar men op hoopte, in de voorlaatste race van het seizoen snelde Sauber hen voorbij in het constructeurskampioenschap waardoor de Britse renstal als elfde eindigde, denkt racedirecteur Dave Ryan dat het team wel heeft laten zien dat het thuishoort in de Formule 1. De Britse renstal maakte in 2016 de switch van Ferrari naar Mercedes-motoren en dat zorgde er in ieder geval voor dat ze tot 5 keer toe Q2 haalden en een punt scoorden in Oostenrijk.

"Laten we eerlijk zijn," zei Ryan aan Autosport. "we hadden echt een flinke stap voorwaarts nodig wat betreft de auto, maar het is ons gelukt. We moeten natuurlijk nog een keer zo'n stap zetten om echt mee te doen, maar ons doel was om wat meer respect af te dwingen in de paddock en dat is ons denk ik wel gelukt."

"We hebben dit jaar voor het eerst vijf keer Q2 gehaald en niet op basis van geluk of wat dan ook, het was te danken aan een veel competitievere auto. We hebben laten zien dat we hier thuishoren en als we het team nog verder kunnen uitbouwen, dan weet ik zeker dat we nog grote stappen kunnen maken."

Wie er in 2017 de Manor gaat besturen is nog niet bekend, de Britse renstal heeft nog geen enkele coureur gecontracteerd. Esteban Ocon krijgt in 2017 de kans bij Force India, maar mogelijk blijft Pascal Wehrlein nog een jaar bij het team. De Duitser wordt echter ook gelinkt aan Sauber en in mindere mate wordt hij genoemd als opvolger van Nico Rosberg.

mee eens alleen blijf het natuurlijk een mercedes motor in een zeer matig chassis als ik dit vergelijk met Torro rosso halen ze er toch te weinig uit

  Chassis borduurde ook voort op die uit 2014/2015. Weinig veranderingen aan de auto zelf qua aero.

Heb best een bepaalde sympathie voor dit team, maar om nou te zeggen dat ze hebben laten zien dat ze in de F1 thuis horen heb ik in ieder geval nog niet gezien. In de kwalificatie hebben ze af en toe voor een kleine stunt gezorgd, maar er is maar 1 punt gehaald. Hoop dat ze toch met goeie coureurs komen voor komend seizoen anders vrees ik dat dat ene punt niet geëvenaard zal worden.

  Ze zouden eigenlijk volgend jaar niet met 2 rookies moeten aanvangen, of er moet een groot talent tussen zitten.
  
  Dit jaar hadden ze een heel matige rijdersbezetting.
  Wehrlein zou best een talent kunnen zijn, maar reed 3 jaar lang in de DTM. Dat is niet de beste voorbereiding voor F1 en Haryanto heeft alleen 3 sprint races in de GP2 gewonnen (in zijn 4e seizoen GP2), dus dan weet je ook dat je daarmee geen talent in huis haalt.
  
  Ocon is waarschijnlijk wel een talent, maar zo laat in het seizoen nog instappen gaat je ook niet veel brengen. Daarnaast vrees ik dat Ocon een beetje overschat wordt.
  
  Doorgaan met Wehrlein lijkt me voor nu een goede keuze voor Manor en dan Maldonado er naast als die een zak geld mee kan nemen. Je zal echter zien dat ze straks voor Jordan King of opnieuw voor Haryanto kiezen. Daarmee dwing je toch niet echt respect af.

  Mee eens,
  Maar er wordt een hoop onzin verteld in dit bericht. Hoezo respect afgedwongen? Manor is het lachertje van de grid gebleven, geen noemenswaardige progressie geboekt ondanks de mercedes motor, en alles bijelkaar opgeteld hebben ze in mijn ogen alleen maar laten zien dat ze juist NIETS in de F1 te zoeken hebben.
