Rob Smedley over snelle rondetijden: "Wij hebben een goede basis"

Op voorhand dichtte men vanwege de rijderskeuze het team van Williams minder kansen toe dan vorig jaar. Maar tot nu toe laten de rondetijden wat anders zien. Zowel gisteren als vandaag laat Felipe Massa toptijden noteren.

Snelle tijd met lege tank

De concurrentie geeft toe dat het aan die rondetijden niet kan tippen, maar de Britse renstal maakt er geen geheim van dat snelste tijden van Massa met een zo goed als lege tank gereden werden. Hoofd-engineer Rob Smedley van het team van Williams: "Wij maken niet langer de fout om met 50 liter brandstof rond te rijden om vervolgens te gaan berekenen hoe snel we zouden kunnen zijn vlak voor het tanken." Daarnaast leert een team volgens Smedley veel meer over de banden als ze onder alle omstandigheden getest worden.

Nico Hulkenberg van het team van Renault: "Wie zulke snelle ronde tijden neerzet moet een goede auto hebben." Dan is de vraag gerechtvaardigd waar het geheim van de Williams FW40 in zit. Smedley weer: "Het fundament waarop wij verder kunnen bouwen is goed. We kunnen rustig ons programma afwerken zonder dat wij allerlei storingen en fouten moeten fixen."

Privéjet vader Stroll pendelt tussen Barcelona en Engeland

De problemen van Lance Stroll waren dan wel een storende factor in de eerste week. De auto liep diverse beschadigingen op en de privéjet van vader Lawrence Stroll is zeven keer tussen Spanje en Engeland heen en weer gevlogen om extra onderdelen naar het circuit te brengen.

Vandaag heeft Stroll overigens geen problemen, hij reed al 43 ronden, maar bleef nog wel twee volle seconden van de tijd van Massa verwijderd.

  Massa reed zijn toptijd met een bijna lege tank en Stroll met misschien 50 KG brandstof, dat is ongeveer een halve tank. In de afgelopen races was het verval in seconden ongeveer 5sec. Met een halve tank is dat 2,5 seconde, dus Stroll is een halve seconde sneller als Massa als hij op de baan blijft.

Wie weet heeft zijn pa juist gezegd ga maar eens een paar keer over de grens heen. Weet je ook hoe dat is met een F1 wagen.
Ik vind een coureur die een paar keer van de baan gaat leuker dan een coureur die altijd netjes rijdt.
En zo lang Williams beter wordt met de centen van Stroll sr heb ik er eigenlijk niets op tegen. Hij heeft investeringen gedaan waar niet alleen junior beter van is geworden maar het hele team.
