Finishen al een prestatie voor McLaren in Australië

Voor McLaren-Honda is het begin van het seizoen 2017 een kwestie van overleven. In de eerste vrije training voor de Grand Prix van Australië kampte Stoffel Vandoorne met een waterlek en bij het begin van de tweede sessie in Melbourne werd druk gesleuteld aan de auto van Fernando Alonso. De problemen uit de voorbereiding zijn nog lang niet verholpen.

Honda heeft wel veranderingen doorgevoerd aan de aandrijflijn, maar Yusuke Hasegawa van de Japanse autofabrikant gaf al toe dat er nog steeds zorgen bestaan over de aandrijflijn. En in de aanloop naar de Australische Grand Prix liet zowel Eric Boullier als Zak Brown doorschemeren dat zondag finishen al een hele prestatie zou zijn voor McLaren.

De Britse renstal is er dit jaar nog niet in geslaagd om zonder problemen tien rondjes achter elkaar te rijden. Alonso deelde aan Sky Sports F1 mede: "Ik weet zeker dat het team de voorbije weken hard gewerkt heeft om de situatie te verbeteren en competitiever te arriveren voor de seizoensstart. Maar in de Formule 1 zijn er geen wonderen mogelijk in twee weken, dus ik verwacht een moeilijk weekend."

De relatie tussen McLaren en Honda is onder druk komen te staan. De Britse renstal tastte reeds voorzichtig de mogelijkheden voor een hereniging met Mercedes af. Directeur Zak Brown stelt echter dat McLaren vastberaden is om het project met Honda te laten slagen. "Het vergt tijd. Het wordt geen makkelijk jaar, maar we zijn toegewijd aan Honda", vertelde hij aan BBC Radio 5 Live.

Van een top team dat mee kan rijden voor overwinningen en kampioenschappen naar een tob team dat al blij is met een paar punten en de finish halen in slechts 5 jaar tijd... triest!

  Gezien vanuit een pessimistisch perspectief is het wel een beetje sneu, ja.
  
  Maar je kan het ook anders zien: McLaren/Honda heeft in 2015/16 gekozen voor een zeer gewaagd concept. Daar moet je als F1 liefhebber toch minimaal respect voor hebben, want dat is waar de F1 (Innovatie en ontwikkeling) om draait. Je zou er zelfs bewondering voor kunnen hebben, zoals ik.
  
  Nu in 2017 ---met een meer conventioneel concept--- doken er in de testen voor het begin van het seizoen onverwachte problemen op. Maar ik moet zeggen dat FP1 en FP2 toch niet dramatisch waren en de weg naar de top is nog lang en ver weg, maar er zit vooruitgang in.

  @JondaRA271: ik waardeer en respecteer innovatie, maar ik vind het bizar dat men met zo een groot budget en zulke goede coureurs er de afgelopen jaren zulke slechte resultaten behaakd hebben en er nog altijd geen zicht op verbetering is. Er moeten dit jaar grote stappen voorwaarts gemaakt worden anders voorzie ik een einde van het McLaren en Honda huwelijk.
