Fernando Alonso: "Buiten de top zes is niet goed genoeg"

Ondanks de matige voorbereiding kende het team van McLaren-Honda niet eens een hele beroerde openingsdag op het Albert Park Circuit in Melbourne. Zowel Fernando Alonso als Stoffel Vandoorne konden veel rijden. Alonso besloot de dag op een twaalfde plek en dat is beter dan verwacht. Alonso waakt echter voor optimisme: volgens de Spaanse tweevoudig wereldkampioen is een plek buiten de top zes niet McLaren-waardig.

In Barcelona moest er iedere dag wel een motor gewisseld worden bij McLaren tijdens een periode van acht testdagen. In Melbourne bleef materiaalpech beide McLaren-coureurs tijdens de training bespaard. Ondanks de gebrekkige voorbereiding verwacht Alonso een verbetering ten opzichte van vorig jaar.

"Iedereen binnen het team werk de klok rond om de problemen de baas te worden. We hebben veel updates meegenomen naar Melbourne. Deze nieuwe reglementen zijn een kans voor ons en die moeten we proberen te pakken. Dit is het derde jaar van de samenwerking met Honda en we moeten naar voren. Vorig jaar stonden we regelmatig in de top tien tijdens de kwalificatie. Wanneer we ons dit jaar niet bij de eerste vijf of zes kunnen scharen dan is dat dus geen verbetering ten opzichte van vorig jaar", aldus Alonso.
