Paddy Lowe: "Toch nog een goede dag ondanks teleurstelling"

Nadat net bekend werd dat VT2 volledig werd afgelast trof Sky Sports F1 Rob Smedley, hoofd engineer van Williams, in de pitstraat. Natuurlijk balen de teams dat ze eigenlijk nog geen meters hebben kunnen maken, maar hij denkt ook aan de fans.

Smedley: "Het is heel erg jammer voor de fans, niet alleen voor de teams. Wij moeten als groep bedenken hoe we dit beter kunnen doen. De fans komen naar het circuit om de auto’s te zien en dat lukt niet."

Het probleem was dat de helikopter niet kon landen en daardoor de wagens niet naar buiten mogen. Dit zou zondag weer kunnen gebeuren en daardoor wordt er schijnbaar gesproken om de race op zaterdag te rijden.

Eerste ronden Lance Stroll in de regen

Technisch directeur van Williams, Paddy Lowe, is het met Smedley eens en refereert aan het ongeval met Di Angelis half jaren '80. Die kwam door problemen met de heli niet op tijd in het ziekenhuis en daardoor namen mogelijk zijn overlevingskansen af en kwam hij te overlijden. Maar Lowe wijst er ook op dat inmiddels alle medische technieken beter zijn geworden, ook op het circuit en dat de regels misschien daar in mee moeten gaan.

Maar toch wisten Felipe Massa en Lance Stroll nog een paar ronden te rijden voor Williams, allebei zeven. Lowe daarover: "Los van de teleurstelling kon Lance voor het eerst in de regen rijden. De snelheid was goed en hij voelde zich comfortabel, vanuit dat gezichtspunt bekeken was het een goede dag."

Af en toe vraag ik me af of het veiligheidsaspect in de F1 niet een beetje overdreven word. Een beetje gevaar hoort erbij.

"De fans komen naar het circuit om de auto’s te zien en dat lukt niet."
Draai het dan om: In plaats van de fans die (min of meer) stil staan op hun plekkie en voorbij rijdende bolides zien , staan nu de bolide stil en lopen de fans er langs. Zien ze iig de auto's, da's weer net ff beter dan niks. Daarbij hoeft een verzwikte enkel niet met spoed naar het ziekenhuis ;-)
