Toto Wolff: "Pascal Wehrlein waarschijnlijk in Bahrein weer achter het stuur"

Ook de tweede Grand Prix zal Pascal Wehrlein niet in actie komen in een Formule 1-auto. De Duitser kampt nog altijd met de gevolgen van een ongeluk tijdens de Race of Champions in Maimi. Mercedes-teambaas Toto Wolff verwacht echter dat Mercedes-talent Wehrlein volgende week fit genoeg is om deel te nemen aan de Grand Prix van Bahrein.

Het bericht van Wolff is enigzins opmerkelijk, aangezien Sauber-teambaas Monisha Kaltenborn gisteren nog liet weten dat Wehrlein waarschijnlijk pas in Rusland weer achter het stuur van de Sauber C36 zal zitten. Wolff noemt het besluit van Wehrlein om ook China over te slaan moedig: "Het is verstandig dat Pascal Wehrlein de tijd neemt om weer volledig fit te worden. We hebben het besluit om China over te slaan begin deze week genomen samen met Monisha Kaltenborn. Natuurlijk hadden we hem kunnen verplichtten te racen in China, maar dat was geen optimale voorbereiding geweest op Bahrein. Hij heeft nu tien dagen om volledig fit te worden en zal in Bahrein waarschijnlijk weer racen."

Net als in Melbourne neemt Ferrari-talent Antonio Giovinazzi de honneurs waar voor Wehrlein. In Melbourne finishte de nummer 2 van het GP2-kampioenschap van 2016 op een keurige twaalfde plaats.

    Dat is snel, want volgens de Telegraaf, brak hij 3 wervels bij zijn crash.

Hij heeft geluk gehad dat hij niet ernstigere verwondingen heeft opgelopen. Een aantal weken kon hij zich nauwelijks bewegen en droeg hij een brace. In die tijd mocht hij niet trainen. Hij had gewoon de kracht niet om de auto te besturen.”

      Maar toch vermeld Wolff nog even dat ze Pascal hadden kunnen dwingen om te rijden en dat hij dan ook gewoon had moeten rijden.

      nu ben ik geen dokter of uberhaupt medisch geschoold, maar drie gebroken wervels moet je toch zien op een rontgenfoto? hij kon nota bene wel testen.
      eerst geen konditie nu een gebroken rug...
      ik geloof niets van dit verhaal

    Ik denk eerlijk gezegd dat er iets heel anders aan de hand is met Wehrlein, namelijk dat hij bang geworden is. Hij zal vast andere crashes hebben gehad, maar deze was wel heel vreemd met een nare landing. Het zou mij niet verbazen dat hij een angststoornis er aan overgehouden heeft.
    Dat van die nekwervels lijkt me onzin, hij is helemaal gecontroleerd, dan was dat al veel eerder naar buiten gekomen. Ook de fitheid lijkt me onzin, als je in 4 testdagen gemiddeld 42 ronden per dag rijdt. Daarbij is er maar 1 manier om er achter te komen of je fit genoeg bent: de race rijden en kijken hoe ver je komt. Volgens mij is het gewoon angst.

      Ik heb bij een ongeval twee wervels gebroken. Dit kwam pas na twee maanden aan het licht.
      Op een eerdere röntgen had men niets gezien.

      Dus het kan wel degelijk hoor dokter van Weert.

      Het kan zeker NUMNUM. En ik neem dus maar aan dat jij ook een toparts prive hebt, en door de FIA-arts gekeurd bent, en door de Mercedes teamarts? De kans is gewoon nihil dat het bij Wehrlein gemist is. En dat denigrerende toontje van je hoeft helemaal niet.
