Max: "Verdedigen is net als aanvallen een kunst"

Red Bull Racing-coureur Max Verstappen haalt zijn schouders op als hij kritiek op zijn rijden krijgt. Zijn manier van verdedigen was vorig jaar meermaals onderwerp van discussie. Er werd zelfs een zogenaamde 'Verstappen-regel' in het leven geroepen om het veranderen van lijn in de remzone tegen te gaan, een regel die voor dit jaar weer geschrapt is om het duelleren te bevorderen.

Verstappen was sowieso niet aangedaan door de op- en aanmerkingen op zijn rijstijl. "Iedereen heeft recht op een eigen mening. Het is duidelijk dat de bazen van de Formule 1 meer racen wilden zien. Inhalen is één ding, dat is een kunst. Maar verdedigen is dat ook. Je moet wel je positie kunnen verdedigen. Dat is wat ik deed. Ik ben blij dat we op dat vlak weer wat meer vrijheid hebben."

FIA-wedstrijdleider Charlie Whiting waarschuwde hem wel dat hij op het randje van het toelaatbare reed. "Ze gaven aan dat ze dit nog nooit eerder meegemaakt hadden, het was nieuw voor ze. Maar ik ben er nooit voor bestraft. Dus volgens mij heb ik ook niks verkeerd gedaan. Het was op de limiet en hard, maar zo hoort het te zijn bij racen, vind ik", aldus Verstappen in gesprek met BBC Sport.

Teamgenoot

Hoe kijkt hij aan tegen zijn duel met stalgenoot Daniel Ricciardo? Verstappen: "Natuurlijk is het positief als je aan het einde van het seizoen hoger dan je teamgenoot eindigt, maar dat is niet alles. Het draait ook om resultaten die eruit springen. Het is beter om een paar races te winnen en een paar keer te crashen dan om steeds als tweede of derde te eindigen. Dat is mijn benadering zolang we niet meedoen om de titel."

Ricciardo heeft in elk geval veel respect voor Verstappen. Het blad Wheels vroeg de Australiër naar de beste coureurs van de huidige grid. "Ik ga mezelf niet noemen, dat ligt zo voor de hand en lijkt arrogant, terwijl het meer zelfvertrouwen is. Afgezien van mezelf ben ik benieuwd naar Lewis Hamilton en Fernando Alonso. Ik zou hen graag een keer als teamgenoot hebben. Van de teamgenoten die ik door de jaren heen heb gehad is Max waarschijnlijk de beste. Die drie namen schieten me te binnen."

Verstappen over zijn relatie met Ricciardo: "We hebben veel respect voor elkaar. In Maleisië heb ik hem gecomplimenteerd met zijn zege afgelopen jaar en in China feliciteerde hij mij. Het is logisch dat we op het circuit met elkaar in gevecht zijn. We pushen elkaar, maar er is zeker geen frictie."

Max verdedigt net zo hard en zelfverzekerd als dat hij aanvalt, het kan natuurlijk een keer fout gaan maar hey that's racing.

Grappig dat Ricciardo Vettel niet zo hoog inschat als Max ;)

  Waarom is dat grappig? Hij heeft één seizoen met Vettel gereden en hem toen verslagen. Verstappen stapte gedurend vorig seizoen in en won direct met een auto waar hij nog aan moest wennen. Vervolgens heeft hij nog een aantal zeer sterke resultaten neergezet. Dus vanuit Ricciardo snap ik het juist wel.
