Toto Wolff: "Bottas heeft vertrouwen vandaag terugbetaald"

Toto Wolff was een blij man na de kwalificatie. Zijn tweede rijder pakt pole en toont aan dat hij zich steeds beter thuisvoelt in de Mercedes en het Hamilton moeilijk kan maken. Ook het verschil met de Ferrari's stemt de kersverse vader tevreden.

Toto Wolff: "De eerste pole is een groot moment voor Valtteri. Hij is rustig gebleven en voor ons als team is het een perfecte situatie, zij (de rijders, red.) zullen elkaar gaan pushen met al het respect dat ze voor elkaars racekwaliteiten hebben."

In de eerste races en kwalificaties zaten er een paar tienden tussen de Mercedes-rijders, maar nu zit hij dus Hamilton in zijn nek. Wolff daarover: "Bottas breng je niet snel van je stuk, net als in Shanghai herstelt hij snel van teleurstellingen. Hij doet het steeds beter en leert snel en dat is een belangrijke kwaliteit die Lewis ook heeft. Na de spin achter de safety car heeft hij zich heel vaak verontschuldigd en hij was ook erg down. Vandaag heeft hij het terugbetaald."

Over het verschil met Ferrari zegt hij: "Het is een grote marge met Ferrari, maar ze hadden allebei onderstuur, dat kan een indicatie zijn dat ze de achterkant spaarden voor morgen. Morgen zijn de punten pas te verdienen en de race gaat spannender worden dan het verschil er nu uit ziet."

Bottas laat in ieder geval goed zien dat A, Ham toch niet zo goed is als hij lijkt en B dat iedere knurft, en daar reken ik gemakshalve zelfs Stroll, Grosjean en Magnussen in mee dan met deze auto een pole kan rijden.

  Turbo, ben het niet helemaal met je eens. Bottas is echt wel snel.
  Stroll: die zou dit in deze fase van zijn carriere in de Merc niet kunnen realiseren. Is ook (nu nog) langzamer dan Massa. Bottas was vaak sneller dan Massa in de Williams, over meerdere seizoenen gemeten.
  Magnussen: daar geloof ik ook niet in.
  Grosjean, ben er geen fan van, maar zet hem in de Merc en hij zal het ook wel behoorlijk goed doen, alhoewel ik Bottas sneller acht (kan ik natuurlijk niet aantonen)
  Ik denk dat Bottas nog wat moet groeien, maar heb er vertrouwen in dat hij ook in de races dichter bij Hamilton zal gaan komen. Ik denk dan, ter vergelijking aan Rosberg, die heeft er ook veel voor moeten doen om Lewis te verslaan. Eerlijk gezegd acht ik Bottas er ook toe in staat. Maar er zijn er niet veel op dit forum die dezelfde mening over Bottas hebben dan mij.

  Turbo, ik weet niet waar je naar de naar de kwalificatie gekeken hebt maar ik keek op Sky en daar heb je oud F1 coureurs die commentaar geven. Het viel hun op dat Hamiltons wagen meer onderstuur had wat er op wijst dat Hamiltonswagen net zoals de Ferraris afgesteld is voor de race en Botass wagen voor de kwalificatie. Waarschijnlijk is het de bedoeling dat ze nu twee verschillende strategieën hebben zodat ze altijd kunnen anticiperen op elke bedreiging van Ferrari. En zelfs met deze afstelling haalde Hamilton nog bijna de pole.

Als je één succesje hebt word je opgehemeld en rij je ff minder, dan moet er gepraat worden. In de F1 kijken ze zelden verder dan de dag, mafkezen...

Leuk voor bottas, maar als het treintje bij de laatste ronde nog steeds hetzelde is als de start dan zal het me niet verbazen als bottas prompt ingehaald wordt door hamilton.. #allesvoorhetkampioenschap
