De Vries veelvuldig actief in simulator van McLaren

Nyck de Vries heeft dit seizoen een iets andere rol gekregen binnen het team van McLaren. De Nederlander maakt al jaren onderdeel uit van het opleidingsprogramma van de Britse renstal, maar met het doorschuiven van Stoffel Vandoorne naar een racestoeltje zijn ook de werkzaamheden voor De Vries veranderd. McLaren doet steeds vaker een beroep op hem voor simulator-sessies.

De Vries legt uit: "Mijn nauwe betrokkenheid bij het simulator-programma van McLaren is dit jaar begonnen. In het verleden nam ik vrijwel nooit plaats in de simulator, zelfs niet voor mijn eigen gewin. Vanaf dit seizoen is het echter zo dat ik zo vaak mogelijk in de simulator kruip om McLaren te assisteren en de auto te ontwikkelen. Dat gebeurt bijvoorbeeld wanneer onze raceweekenden elkaar niet overlappen."

"Twee weken geleden was ik bijvoorbeeld in Woking om de raceverslagen voor de Chinese Grand Prix te doen. Op vrijdag was ik om 02.30 uur in de fabriek om de lokale tijd uit China aan te houden. Helaas werd er in de eerste vrije training weinig gereden, dus was er weinig te doen, maar we stonden wel paraat om te helpen. McLaren opereert de simulator wanneer de coureurs ook in het echt de baan op gaan."

"China was de eerste keer dat ik dit zo moest doen voor McLaren. Het is fascinerend om zo vroeg op de fabriek te arriveren en al zoveel bedrijvigheid te zien, met allemaal teamleden in teamkleding die druk in de weer zijn. Het is een aparte groep mensen ter ondersteuning van het raceteam ter plekke. Het was een gave ervaring en hopelijk rijden we later dit seizoen op meer schappelijke tijden en is er wel wat actie in VT1 en VT2."

Win-win situatie

Hoe zou De Vries zijn samenwerking met McLaren omschrijven? "Het is een win-win situatie. Het is goed voor mij om altijd met mijn sport en mijn vak bezig te zijn, mijn feedback en vaardigheden verder te ontwikkelen, samen te werken met engineers om dingen over de techniek te leren en te zien hoeveel werk de teams in het uiteindelijke resultaat steken. Dat kan alleen maar in mijn voordeel zijn."

"Onze generatie coureurs moet juist dingen in de simulator oppikken, want je mag tegenwoordig niet meer zoveel testen als vroeger. Om je continu te ontwikkelen en te trainen moet je noodgedwongen uitwijken naar de simulator. Je kunt rijstijlen en data met de andere coureurs uit het team vergelijken en dat komt me zeer goed van pas, zowel voor mezelf als voor mijn werk in de simulator. Al met al is het dus zeer positief."

Als het echt een hele goede simulator is, dan gaat hij dus net zo vaak kapot ;)

  Of zou dat iets met de krakkemikkige vertaling uit het Engels te maken hebben?

  De simulator van McLaren is veruit de beste van de F1. RBR MB en fer kunnen er niet aan tippen. McLaren heeft samen met Honda veel geïnvesteerd in de simulator om de situatie zo echt mogelijk te simuleren. Je ziet het ook direct terug, beide staan continu stil.

  @Motori-Arte; jaja, prachtig verhaal, maar waarschijnlijk heeft McLaren dat zelf de wereld in geslingerd. Want het is mij klip en klaar dat die simulator een flut ding is; was ie echt goed geweest dan had de echte McLaren niet telkens na een halve outlap en soms een getimde ronde afgesleept hoeven worden. Dan weet je namelijk al voordat je gaat rijden dat de meuk uit elkaar dondert.
  Ik weet dat RBR zelfs real time simuleert waarbij er letterlijk een PU op exact dezelfde wijze wordt belast als de PU's in de auto's van de coureurs. Gaat nog even een stapje verder dus.

  @beemerdude, mclareren simulator is zelfs zo goed dat de Vries gemiddeld twee rondjes rijdt.

  Tip, zet de simulator op Arcade modus. Dan haalt zelfs Maldonado de finish.

  @commando heb laatst nog een PSN sessie gehad met de Vries. Daarin was hij zelfs realistisch, na een ronde ging hij de pits in en heb hem niet meer gezien.

Ik ben toch zo benieuwd wat er uiteindelijk van dat ventje wordt.
Ik zag hem van de week bij Ziggo en daar komt hij wel sympathiek over maar om nou te zeggen daar zit een killer van een toekomstig F1 coureur... Ik hoop dat hij de kans krijgt en het dan daadwerkelijk doet!

Ik vrees dat deze jongeman de F1 niet gaat halen. De prestaties in lagere raceklassen zijn aardig maar niet overtuigend. M.a.w., hij mag simulatiewerk doen omdat Turvey waarschijnlijk niet beschikbaar is / was.

Dit is interessant, maar begrijpen doe ik het niet helemaal. Betekent dit dat Nick op het scherm van de simulator ziet hoe bijv. Stoffel rijdt, of dat Nick tegelijkertijd een rondje over het circuit rijdt? Wel raar (en sneu) dat hij niet in de simulator mag rijden als de échte McLarens stilstaan.
