Stoffel Vandoorne: "Uitzoeken waarom laatste testdag Bahrein zo goed ging"

Na de voor McLaren dramatisch verlopen Grand Prix van Bahrein, waar Stoffel Vandoorne niet eens kon starten vanwege een probleem met de waterdruk, verliep de laatste dag van de aansluitende test in Bahrein opeens zonder probleem voor McLaren en Vandoorne. Zowel McLaren als Vandoorne tasten in het duister waarom de dag zo goed verliep.

Vandoorne reed op woensdag 81 ronden, een enorm aantal voor McLaren begrippen. In de wintertests wist de ooit zo succesvolle renstal vaak niet meer dan twaalf of dertien rondjes achter elkaar te rijden. Bovendien reed McLaren op woensdag met dezelfde specificatie motor als een dag eerder, toen testcoureur Oliver Turvey bijna de hele dag binnen stond vanwege een kapotte Honda-motor.

Vandoorne: "Meer van dit soort dagen nodig"

In gesprek met Autosport blikt Vandoorne terug op zijn succesvolle testdag op het Bahrain International Circuit: "Het Grand Prix-weekend was natuurlijk dramatisch met zoveel motorische problemen. Nu we eindelijk een goede testdag hebben gekend hebben we meer van dit soort dagen nodig, ook tijdens de raceweekends. Ik weet dat de goede test geen garantie is dat we de komende tijd ook geen problemen meer zullen hebben."

Leren van goede testdag

Volgens Vandoorne kunnen McLaren en Honda veel positieve punten meenemen na de probleemloze laatste testdag, maar is het vooral belangrijk uit te zoeken waarom het nu zo goed ging: "We moeten goed uitzoeken waarom het woensdag juist zo goed ging en hopelijk kunnen we dat meenemen en kunnen we daar in Rusland al de vruchten van plukken. Testdagen als afgelopen woensdag wil je altijd hebben."

Vandoorne stipt ook dat het team door de probleemloze dag ook eindelijk meer heeft kunnen laten van het chassis. Fernando Alonso liet eerder al weten dat het chassis van McLaren tot de top drie van het veld behoort.

  Toen bekend werd dat McLaren in 2015 met Honda motoren zou gaan rijden, hebben ze Mercedes moeten beloven dat Honda in 2014 niet de Mercedes motor mocht bekijken. Honda heeft zelf een motor moeten bouwen zonder de techniek af te kijken. En nu zou Mercedes Honda ineens wel gaan helpen, ik geloof er niets van.
  
  Mercedes heeft miljoenen gestoken in hun motor en die zouden wel gek zijn om dan nu de concurrentie te helpen, waardoor de kans op het wk alleen maar kleiner wordt. Ze zouden Ferrari ook geholpen hebben, maar beide partijen ontkennen dat. Als de Italiaanse fans er achter zouden komen dat Mercedes geholpen zou hebben, dan breekt de hel los in Italië.
  
  Het enige wat wel wordt toegeven is dat ze Ferrari gewezen hebben op Wolf Zimmerman. Zimmermann is de projectleider achter de elektrisch aangedreven Mercedes SLS, de wagen met de vleugeldeuren. Tijdens dat project werd naar verluidt veel ervaring opgedaan die uiteindelijk in de Formule 1 werd gebruikt. Honda zou ook veel van deze man kunnen leren.
  
  We kunnen het eigenlijk maar aan 1 persoon vragen (wat betreft Ferrari) en dat is MrMonza.

Maak me sterk dat Honda ondertussen niet weet wat de zwakke punten zijn, het probleem is om ze adeqaat op te lossen ... Misschien toch weer een motor gebouwd die er in theorie fantastische uitziet maar in de praktijk letterlijk en figuurlijk te zwak, zowel het vermogen als mechanische.... Net zoals Renault begin 2015 veel te lichte/zwakke zuiger had ontworpen, toen dat probleem eenmaal geadresseerd was het langzaam maar zeker beter ging... Probleem van Honda lijkt dat ze nu voor de tweede keer een slechte motor gebouwd hebben ...

Resultaat. Er ging niets mis. Dus nu zijn er geen problemen meer bij McL. ;-) ;-)
McL hoort tot de top3 (eerst zien dan geloven). Laat McL eerst maar zorgen dat zij uit de top3 van onder komen.

Zorgwekkende tijden voor McLaren. Men wist precies waarom het altijd fout ging en nu gaat het ineens goed. Wat nu??

Het blijft een raar verhaal met al die data en informatie van deze "goede" en al de data van de kapotte motoren zouden ze toch wel wat kunnen doen lijkt mij.

Mcclaren is aan het uitzoeken waarom het niet foutging.
Dit wordt niks meer en begrijp nu ook waarom Alonso een uitstapje maakt naar de Indy 500.
