Formule 1 keert dit jaar mogelijk terug in Londen voor een demonstratie

Een paar dagen voorafgaand aan de Grand Prix van Groot-Brittannië op Silverstone rijden de Formule 1-bolides mogelijk door de straten van Londen. Dat is momenteel onderwerp van gesprek tussen Liberty Media en de Westminster City Council volgens The Telegraph.

Gesprekken in vroeg stadium

De geplande demonstratie zou dan op 12 juli moeten plaatsvinden, twee dagen voor de eerste vrije training en vier dagen voor de race. De demonstratie zou de eerste in zijn soort zijn in ruim tien jaar en zal de hoop op een Formule 1-race in Londen weer doen opleven.

Vorige maand werd er een wet aangenomen waardoor motorsportevenementen weer op de straten Engeland mogen worden gehouden. Een woordvoerder zegt namens de gemeente: "Vertegenwoordigers van de Great Londen Authority en Westminster City Council hebben met de organisatie gesproken over een mogelijke demonstratie in Londen, niet over een race." Er is nog geen overeenstemming bereikt aangezien de gesprekken zich nog in een erg vroeg stadium bevinden.

Laatste Formule 1-demonstratie was in 2004

Formule 1-directeur Chase Carey liet zich al eens ontvallen graag een race in Londen te willen organiseren. In januari zei hij: "Londen is een geweldige stad en als je erover nadenkt is het geen vraag in welke steden je zou willen zijn."

In 2004 was er al eens een demonstratie en kwamen er een half miljoen mensen af op het evenement om Jenson Button, Fernando Alonso en Nigel Mansell van dichtbij te zien.

2 Weken daarvoor kun je heel wat F1 teams (en nog veel meer) een klein eindje onder Londen in actie zien: Goodwood Festival of Speed. Veel leuker dan wat demorondjes en donuts in de stad.

  Dat is toch wel een randje anders WOUTER.. Goodwood is een fijn intern feestje voor de liefhebbers, coureurs en alles wat met elke willekeurige tak van autosport te maken heeft. (hoewel er de laaste jaren een hoop "kijk-mij-eens-belangrijk-zijn"-gasten bij komen)
