IndyCar-baas: "Wij gaan niet ineens Formule 1-coureurs benaderen"

De Indy 500 heeft aardig wat publiciteit gekregen (om maar eens een understatement te gebruiken) doordat Fernando Alonso vanuit de Formule 1 een tijdelijke overstap maakt. Afgelopen woensdag werd de test van Alonso door meer dan 2 miljoen belangstellenden bekeken. 

Het is geen strategie

De vraag ligt dus voor de hand of de IndyCar actief gaat proberen om rijders te verleiden om te komen racen. IndyCar-baas Mark Miles daarover tegen persbureau Reuters: "Ik denk niet dat het de juiste strategie voor ons is." Over de hype rond Alonso zegt hij: "Het is een unieke opeenstapeling van omstandigheden, maar we gaan nu niet de Grand Prix aflopen om meer coureurs proberen te verleiden. Maar meer coureurs zullen het nu in de gaten houden, wellicht komt er een punt in hun carrière dat het een logische stap is, maar het is niet persé een strategie."

Wereldwijde spanning

Op het moment dat het bekend werd gemaakt was het de Spaanse IndyCar-coureur Oriol Servia die Miles belde. Hij werd wakker met 60 berichten op zijn telefoon of hij een reactie wilde geven aan de Spaanse pers. "Het is duidelijk dat er veel aandacht is en alleen al gekeken naar het aantal kijkers naar de test van deze week kan je wel zeggen dat de hele wereld het erg spannend vindt", zo sluit de President van Hulman & Co af.

    Misschien een domme vraag hoor, maar wat maakt de Indy 500 nou zo speciaal? Ervan uitgaande dat er wel meer ovals in de VS liggen waar ook vast wel eens 500 rondjes op gereden worden? Heb totaal geen benul van die wereld dus daarom vroeg ik me dit zo eens af.

      ten eerste rijden ze geen 500 ronden maar 500mijl en de oval is 2.5 mijl. het is de history net als Monaco en de 24 uur van Iemand. verschil is ook dat de grid voor de indy 33 startplaatsen heeft en de overige races ik meen 26. Inlezen over de indy gaat je helpen?

      Gemiddelde snelheid in de race tegen de 220 mijl per uur, grofweg 350 km/h gemiddeld over een rondje. In kwalificatie komt daar nog een 10 mijl bij ongeveer, zeg tussen de 365 en 370 km/h gemiddeld.
      De bochten zijn niet volgas je moet afremmen, de rechte stukken lopen ze tegen de 400.
      De auto's zijn ontworpen/afgesteld om de bochten zo snel mogelijk te nemen, dus rechtuit rijden op de rechte stukken is niet vanzelfsprekend.
      500 mijl, 200 rondjes, minimaal 2,5 uur racen.
      Nederland heeft een legende, Arie Luyendijk.
      Won de race 2 keer.
      Je hebt twee type coureurs: die de muur geraakt hebben en die de muur nog gaan raken.
      Als je de muur niet hebt geraakt ging je niet hard genoeg.
      Elke coureur die er te makkelijk overdacht is gecrasht.
      Een doorontwikkelde Peugeot grandprix motor ontwerp is tot halverwege jaren 70 de motor geweest om mee te rijden. 2,7 liter 4 cilinder turbo met 1000pk was normaal.
      Deze motor had geen losse kop, koppakking kon niet worden opgeblazen.
      De Offenhauser (offy) is afgeleid van een Peugeot motor uit 1914, 4 cilinders, 16 kleppen, dubbelbovenliggende tandwielaangedreven nokkenassen. Ook de Formule 1 heeft dit allemaal gekopieerd.
      Heeft als Indy 500 deeluitgemaakt van het Formule 1 circus in de jaren 60.
      Triple Crown van Graham Hill is eigenlijk een 4 voudige Kroon: wereldkampioen F1, winnaar van de gp van Monaco, LeMans winnaar en winnaar van de Indy 500.
      Maar de evenementen leMans, GP monaco en Indy 500 zijn vooroorlogse races die vandaag de dag nogsteeds gehouden worden.
      Dat een Tom Coronel en Robert Doornbos Alonso voor gek verklaren en zelf dat nu niet meer zouden doen ivm gevaar, kudo's voor Robert hij heeft eraan deelgenomen, bewijst dat het nogsteeds een grotere uitdaging voor mens is dan voor machine.
      Dus eigenlijk zoals Formule 1 ook nogsteeds zou moeten zijn...

      Idd Macgyver! Plus Indy heeft ons een aantal van de meest iconische races gegeven. 1984 Sullivan die spint in een duel een pitstop maakt en alsnog de race wint. Sjaak Villeneuve die twee rondjes achterstand inloopt en de race wint doordat Scott Goodyear de pace car inhaalt. Jim Clark die heel Amerika op zijn kop zet in de jaren 60 met Chapman en Hill. Goodyear die net tekort kwam om Little Al te verslaan in 1992 10 jaar nadat Johncock Rick Mears op een identieke manier achter zich hielt. En als laatste Dan Wheldon die in een nieuw team als "invaller" de race wint nadat Hildebrand als rookie in de laatste bocht crasht, en dan Wheldon die later dat jaar zou omkomen de laatste indycar race dat jaar. Dat soort dingen maakt Indy zo speciaal, verhalen, actie, verdriet. Alles wat mooi is aan autoracen zit in Indy. Net zoals in de 24 uur van Le Mans. De twee grootste evenementen in de autosport.

    Hij kijkt wel uit om F1 coureurs te gaan benaderen, dan komt er geen reguliere Indy-rijder meer aan te pas ;)).

    Mark Miles zou m.i. ook weinig succesvol zijn bij het benaderen van F1-coureurs. Dat Alonso nu wel deelneemt kan alleen vanwege bijzondere omstandigheden.

      True, hooguit na hun actieve F1-carrière. De hele situatie met McLaren/Honda en Alonso is inderdaad vrij uniek. Als Alonso mee zou doen om de prijzen (in het klassement) stond hij in Monaco wel aan de start natuurlijk.
