Mika Häkkinen: "Ik overwoog in 2002 een IndyCar-carrière"

Mika Häkkinen verheugt zich er nu al op om Fernando Alonso in de Indy 500 aan het werk te zien. De voormalig wereldkampioen en McLaren-coureur kwam zelf ook eens in de verleiding om de overstap te maken.

De spanning loopt bij autosportliefhebbers op naarmate de datum van 28 mei nadert. Dan zal Fernando Alonso een poging doen om de Indy 500 op zijn naam te schrijven. De eerste test van Alonso in een IndyCar leverde online gelijk al meer dan 2 miljoen kijkers op. Maar het is niet alleen een PR-stunt, experts zijn van mening dat de Spanjaard ook echt kan winnen. Onder hen Mika Häkkinen.

"Ik zou niet heel erg verbaasd zijn als Fernando de Indy 500 wint", aldus de Fin in zijn column. Hij gaat verder: "Hij is zeer getalenteerd en hij zal de race zorgvuldig bestuderen en hij heeft genoeg voorbereidingstijd gehad."

Overstap naar IndyCar overwogen

Häkkinen heeft zelf ook overwogen om in een IndyCar te stappen. "Ik heb in 2002 over de IndyCars nagedacht en ben naar Amerika gegaan om Zak Brown te ontmoeten. Hij begreep dat het belangrijk was om Formule 1-talent naar Indy te brengen" zo vertelt hij. Uiteindelijk besloot hij vanwege zijn familie de stap niet te maken maar er was nog een reden: "En daarnaast had ik eigenlijk al besloten om een stap terug te doen van open wheel racing."

De Fin zou voor het team van Mercedes nog een aantal jaren in de DTM rijden.

Nooit geweten en ook nooit een gerucht of iets dergelijke gelezen rond die tijd. Mika was eind 2001 behoorlijk moe na de slopende jaren 98-2001 met 2 titels, 1 bijna en een vrij vervelend 2001 met een zeer harde klap in Melbourne, die kapotte auto in Spanje in de laatste ronde en meer tegenslag gedurende het jaar. Het zal waarschijnlijk alleen in zijn hoofd gespeeld hebben, DTM was ook niet echt een succes, al vond ik het wel tof dat hij in de autosport nog even bleef.

Als dat klopt dan heeft de Braziliaan Hélio Castroneves enorm veel mazzel gehad. ;)

Ik ben toch iets minder optimistisch denk dat er velen het toch wat onderschatten (rondjes rijden), het is zeer intensief concentratie is key!

Heb vroeger nog wel wat gesimraced op ovals was bij uitstek het meest energie slopend wat ik ooit deed in simracen.

Alonso is een kanjer dat staat buiten kijf maar zo maar even oversteken en winnen het kan maar ik schat de kans eerder klein.

Tja, Alex Rossi won hem ook. Om de Indy 500 te winnen heb je vooral een flinke dosis geluk nodig.
