Mark Webber: "Alonso vroeg mij om ook de Indy 500 te gaan rijden"

Mark Webber is in Bahrein door Fernando Alonso gevraagd om ook de Indy 500 te gaan rijden, maar de oud Red Bull Racing-coureur had geen interesse in het event, zo zegt hij in gesprek met crash.net.

Webber is de afgelopen jaren één van de weinige coureurs die een poging hebben gedaan om twee van de drie onderdelen van de Triple Crown te winnen. Deze bestaat uit de Grand Prix van Monaco, de 24 uur van Le Mans en de Indy 500. Monaco wist hij in 2010 en 2012 op zijn naam te schrijven en in Le Mans was hij heel dichtbij met een tweede plaats in 2015.

"Als ik Le Mans had gewonnen...."

Webber: "Ik had het misschien wel gedaan als ik Le Mans had gewonnen, maar ik had eigenlijk geen interesse in Indy." Maar ondanks dat hij die niet won kwam wel de vraag van Alonso die op 28 mei de Indy 500 gaat rijden. "Fernando vroeg mij in Bahrein om de Indy te proberen. En als ik die tweede race (van de Triple Crown, red.) ook had gewonnen was er meer druk geweest", aldus de coureur die eind vorig jaar zijn pensioen aankondigde.

Webber geeft aan dat het uitstapje van Alonso voortkomt uit frustratie. "Als hij nu Formule 1-races had gewonnen was hij nooit gegaan. Nimmer had een coureur zonder prestaties zoveel media-aandacht als Alonso in de Formule 1 dit jaar", aldus Webber die afsluit met Alonso het allerbeste te wensen voor de Indy 500.

Voordat iedereen over Mark struikelt, aangezien dit typisch zo'n bericht is waar iedereen Mark graag met beide voeten op de grond wil vastpinnen: Fernando en hij zijn vrienden, dat is algemeen bekend. Een reporter vraagt of hij het er met Fernando over heeft gehad -> antwoord.

Gaat Alonso de Indy500 rijden? Niks van gemerkt! Pff echt teveel "nieuws". Heeft hij slim aangepakt! Ik snap het van Webber wel, hij heeft al een gooi naar de triple gedaan, weinig nut om dat nu nogmaals te proberen als hij er nog 2 moet winnen en eigenlijk wil stoppen.

Als Mark Webber de Triple Crown had gewonnen was m.i. de waarde daarvan gedaald, want het hoort een prijs te zijn van grote kampioenen.

Je kunt het ook omdraaien: alleen grote kampioenen kunnen de Triple Crown daadwerkelijk winnen. Tot nu toe is dat alleen Graham Hill gelukt, dat zegt wellicht genoeg.

  Beetje onzinreactie.... Immers, wie van de grote F1-rijders heeft het überhaupt geprobeerd? Stewart, Prost, Lauda, Mansell en Schumacher in ieder geval niet, en van Senna zullen we het nooit weten of hij een poging zou hebben gedaan.

Mark wil dus niet winnen omdat het de druk zou verhogen op hem en verwachtingen van anderen om nog eens te winnen..
