Stoffel Vandoorne: "Eindelijk een vrijdag zonder problemen"

In tegenstelling tot teamgenoot Fernando Alonso kende Stoffel Vandoorne een productieve dag in zijn McLaren-Honda. Waar teamgenoot Fernando Alonso in de ochtend na een paar bochten al weer aan de kant stond met een kapotte Honda-motor, bleef Vandoorne technisch maleur bespaard.

Ook met de snelheid van de MCL32 lijkt het redelijk goed te zitten in Barcelona. Met het chassis is weinig mis, zo blijkt uit de dertiende tijd van Vandoorne. De GP2-kampioen van 2015 en Alonso verliezen de meeste tijd door de zwakke Honda-motor: "Eindelijk een vrijdag zonder problemen. Ook hebben we voor de verandering de motor niet hoeven te wisselen. We hebben het hele programma kunnen afwerken, dit is een goede start van het weekend."

Betrouwbaarheid blijft zorgenkindje

Vandoorne rekent zich na een goede dag echter nog niet rijk, de Belg weet dat Honda het lek nog lang niet boven heeft: "De betrouwbaarheid blijft een punt van zorg. Waar ik in de eerste races veel problemen kende, lijkt nu mijn teamgenoot aan de beurt. We moeten hard aan het werk om de auto betrouwbaar te krijgen." Het stilvallen van Alonso in de eerste training was alweer de achttiende keer dat er een probleem was met de Honda-motor, de wintertests meegerekend.
