Zak Brown: "Ongeloof en verdriet bij stilvallen Alonso"

McLaren-directeur Zak Brown laat vanuit Barcelona weten dat McLaren 'ongeloof' en 'verdriet' voelde toen het Fernando Alonso na een paar honderd meter zag stilvallen tijdens de eerste vrije training op het Circuit de Catalunya. Honda besloot vervolgens de complete motor te wisselen, waardoor Alonso net als teamgenoot Vandoorne al door de toegestane motoren voor het seizoen heen is.

Het was een triest beeld om te zien: Alonso die bij het gas geven vanuit bocht twee spinde en met een rokende bolide tot stilstand kwam. Niet veel later gutsten er grote hoeveelheden olie uit de achterkant van de MCL32. Alonso besloot vervolgens het circuit te verlaten om zijn frustraties van zich af te spelen tijdens een potje tennis. In de tweede vrije training wist de tweevoudig wereldkampioen nog twintig rondjes te rijden, maar dat was vooral om de gebruikelijke checks uit te voeren.

Blijven werken om problemen op te lossen

Volgens Brown werkt McLaren keihard om samen met Honda de problemen op te lossen. De Amerikaan geef toe vol ongeloof te hebben gezien hoe een van zijn auto's wederom stil stond: "Het gevoel in de garage was echt niet fijn toen we het zagen op de schermen. We moeten echter verder. Gelukkig kon Stoffel Vandoorne zonder problemen zijn rondjes rijden en heeft hij nuttige data kunnen verzamelen."

Betrouwbaarheid op dieptepunt?

Vandoorne kende voor de verandering een probleemloze vrijdag en stond aan het einde van de dag op een 'verdienstelijke' dertiende plaats. Op de vraag of de betrouwbaarheid van de Honda-motor slechter is geworden, antwoord Brown: "Ik kan dat niet beoordelen, volgens mij hebben we nog geen betrouwbaarheid gehad dit seizoen."

Blijft maar duren daar, ongelooflijk toch.
Alonso gaf al aan open te staan voor alles...dat is in feite een open sollicitatie en je kan de man best begrijpen. Hij heeft nog enkele jaren om zijn blazoen op te poetsen.
