Fernando Alonso wordt geen fulltime IndyCar-coureur

Fernando Alonso maakt dit weekend een eenmalig uitstapje naar de IndyCar. De tweevoudig wereldkampioen doet zondag mee aan de grootste race ter wereld, de Indy 500. Alonso liet weten het naar zijn zin te hebben in de auto, maar sluit een overstap naar Amerika in 2018 uit.

Toen Alonso en McLaren in maart bekend maakten mee te doen aan de Indy 500 leidde dat aanvankelijk tot veel verbaasde reacties. Alonso heeft de critici de mond gesnoerd en start zondag keurig als vijfde. Reden voor deelname aan de Indy 500 is de ambitie van Alonso om de 'triple crown' te winnen. Alonso is al wereldkampioen Formule 1, maar zal ook de Indy 500 en de 24 uur van Le Mans moeten winnen om de allergrootste te worden.

"Ik heb geen plannen om fulltime in Amerika te gaan racen. De Indy 500 is prima om te doen, maar ik wil nog steeds winnen in de Formule 1. De Indy 500 en de 24 uur van Le Mans zijn erg aantrekkelijk om aan mee te doen, maar na de Indy 500 gaat de focus weer uit naar Formule 1", aldus Fernando Alonso vanuit Indianapolis.
