Toto Wolff doet oproep voor meer 'echte' circuits

Mercedes-teambaas Toto Wolff vindt dat er meer stratencircuits moeten komen. Volgens de Oostenrijker zijn er nu teveel circuits die aandoen als parkeerplaatsen van een grote supermarkt. Dit bedoeld Wolff natuurlijk niet letterlijk: de moderne circuits hebben geen grindbakken meer waardoor een foutje vaak zonder gevolgen blijft. 

Niet alleen stratencircuits zijn volgens Wolff nodig, ook moet de Formule 1 er voor waken dat het klassiekers als Silverstone, Spa-Francorchamps en Monza behoudt: "De Formule 1 draait om de beste technologie in combinatie met rijders met de beste vaardigheden. Op een circuit als Spa-Francorchamps wordt een fout nog hard afgestraft, helaas zijn er teveel circuits op de kalender waar dat niet meer het geval is. De Formule 1 moet haar DNA behouden en de aard van de circuits is daarbij absoluut belangrijk. Op sommige banen zou ik zelfs met twee weken trainen probleemloos kunnen rijden." 

De uitspraken van Wolff komen niet uit het niet niets: de Oostenrijker bracht vorige week een bezoek aan de Mille Miglia. Deze beroemde race in Italië liet Wolff inzien waarom hij zoveel van racen en Formule 1 houdt: "De Formule 1 is een levensstijl met passie en energie. Onze coureurs doen dingen die anderen niet durven. Om een Formule 1-auto te besturen heb je lef nodig en moet je risico nemen om hard te gaan. Dat is de reden waarom ik zoveel liefde heb voor de Formule 1."

    Ui ben ik het niet vaak met hem eens, maar 21 keer Monaco per jaar vind ik prima! Scheelt ook veel in geld... dat over de aarde vliegen...

      Ja snap je gevoel, maar soms heb je toch ook wel zin in een inhaal-race niet?
      Kunnen ook een stratenrace in almere organiseren, buiten de stad een paar testbanen waar de teams kunnen oefenen, krijgen we ipv 'Ondertussen in Milton-Keynes' 'Ondertussen in Lelystad'
      Alles in de buurt en makkelijk bereikaar;)

    Dan in Hongarije bijvoorbeeld de grindbakken terug en hoger curbstones, straffen foutjes ook harder af.
    Doe dat op meer banen en voila, verrassingen komen zoals we vaak zien in regenraces. Bestaande klassieke banen als Monza, Montreal, Spa, Barcelona hebben allemaal hun glans verloren door invoeren van stukken asfalt waardoor een fout geen nadeel meer is voor de foutlozen. Silverstone idemdito en zo kunnen we even doorgaan. Daarom is Monaco ook een verademing hoewel ook deze baan heeft ingeleverd door de bochten aan te passen voorala bij rascasse en voor zwembad, waar Ocon in de vangrails hing zojuist. Dat was echt een knikkerbak voorheen. Enige wat goed is veranderd is uitkomen tunnel, daar ging Wendlinger bijna naar het hiernamaals en Button kon het redelijk navertellen een tijdje terug.

      Monaco lijkt m.i. vooraf wel leuk en apart maar als deze GP achter de rug is ben ik meestal blij dat we het gehad hebben en naar Canada gaan.

    Dat zegt hij in Monaco? Het saaiste circuit van het hele jaar. De race wordt daar op zaterdag gereden tenzij er regen is.

    Wat die Wolff over Silverstone, Spa-Francorchamps en Monza zegt okay, maar meer stratencircuits? Hij is echt niet goed wijs. Mijn voorstel is veel meer en veel langere Mille Miglia’s zodat die Wolff geen tijd meer heeft voor de F1.
