Fernando Alonso: "McLaren is zeer competitief"

Een plekje bij de beste tien op de startopstelling zat er gisteren niet in voor het team van McLaren, maar volgens coureur Fernando Alonso is de auto waarmee het team rijdt zeer competitief. De enige reden waarom de competitiviteit van het chassis en aerodynamica er niet uit komen is volgens Alonso het gebrek aan vermogen van de Honda-motor.

Alonso's voorbereiding op de kwalificatie was niet ideaal met een technisch probleem in de eerste vrije training. In de tweede vrije training duurde het lang voordat Alonso naar buiten kwam, maar ondanks de gebrekkige voorbereiding was Alonso in de kwalificatie wederom sneller dan teamgenoot Stoffel Vandoorne, die geen problemen kende in de aanloop naar de kwalificatie.

"De problemen in de eerste vrije training waren niet ideaal, zeker omdat ik even weer moest wennen aan de auto na mijn uitstapje naar IndyCar. In de tweede training duurde het lang voordat we naar buiten konden, we konden dus niet ons volledige programma afwerken. In de derde training ging het vervolgens prima en wisten we een goede kwalificatie te rijden", aldus Alonso in gesprek met Autosport.

Ondanks het niet halen van de top tien in de kwalificatie laat Alonso weten tevreden te zijn met de snelheid van zijn McLaren op het Circuit Gilles Villeneuve: "In de derde training hadden we al een goede snelheid en die snelheid wisten we mee te nemen naar de kwalificatie. Ik had het gevoel dat ik er iedere ronde het maximale uithaalde. In Barcelona was onze kwalificatie ook goed, maar hier nog beter omdat motorvermogen hier erg belangrijk is. We weten hoeveel tijd we verliezen op de rechte stuk, wanneer ik kijk naar de snelste man in Q2 zaten wij er niet ver vanaf."

In Q2 had hij "less power than Q1"... ben bang dat we n nieuwe plof gaan zien..

Zonde voor het McLaren team en alle medewerkers dat miljoenen euro's en al die uren van hard werken zich niet uit kan laten betalen in succes. Ze hebben een dijk van een chassis gebouwd, echt topwerk geleverd. Helaas hangt er een onding in aan de achterkant wat al het harde werk bijna teniet doet.

Met een Mercedes motor zouden ze Ferrari en Mercedes het vuur aan de schenen leggen dit seizoen.
