Ricciardo: "Hadden beter willen zijn dan we zijn"

Een derde van het Formule 1-seizoen 2017 zit erop, tijd voor een tussenbalans. Met die gedachte stapte Red Bull Racing op coureur Daniel Ricciardo af. De Australiër finishte in de afgelopen drie races op het podium, maar dat neemt de teleurstelling over het feit dat hij zich niet kan mengen in de strijd om de titel niet weg. Desalniettemin houdt hij de moed erin.

Ricciardo: "Het is een seizoen waarin hoogte- en dieptepunten elkaar in rap tempo opvolgen. We hadden beter willen zijn dan we zijn. Het is leuk dat we drie achtereenvolgende podiumplekken in de wacht hebben gesleept, maar we hadden liever een erelijst zoals Sebastian Vettel gehad; voornamelijk eerste en tweede plaatsen. We weten waar we staan en we moeten de mouwen opstropen. De afgelopen races hebben we meer geleerd dan daarvoor en dat zal helpen om het proces te versnellen."

Tattoo op zijn billen

Dat zijn humor er niet onder te lijden heeft, blijkt wel uit het antwoord van Ricciardo op een vraag over zijn eerste zege in de Formule 1. "Ik heb de datum - 8 juni 2014 - op mijn billen laten tatoeëren. Nee, zonder dollen, het was een geweldige dag. Ik herinner het me nog goed. De hele race was chaotisch. Mercedes kreeg op een gegeven moment problemen en ik dacht dat het podium al cool was."

"Op dat moment had ik nog niet vaak op het podium gestaan, dus dat vond ik al gaaf. Vervolgens kreeg ik het idee dat er meer in zat. Nico Rosberg viel terug en als ik Sergio Perez voorbij kon, dan had ik opeens een kans om te winnen. Dat lukte en ik won! Op het podium zag ik al die mensen op het rechte stuk. Er waren veel Australische vlaggen, dat was een verrassing. Ik zal het nooit vergeten."

Fysiek

Terug naar de dag van vandaag; zijn de huidige Formule 1-bolides fysiek gezien echt zoveel zwaarder als hun voorgangers? Ricciardo: "Ik heb er wel iets van gemerkt. Het is absoluut meer fysiek, maar ik ben ook sterker geworden. Dat kun je tegen elkaar wegstrepen. Bij sommige rookies zie je wel dat ze zich er misschien niet voldoende op voorbereid hebben. Dan zijn die laatste tien tot vijftien ronden van een race wel pijnlijk."
