Lance Stroll: "Ik heb hier geen woorden voor"

Na zijn eerste puntenfinish in zijn thuisrace in Canada zorgde Lance Stroll in Azerbeidzjan voor een enorme sensatie door zijn eerste podiumfinish te behalen. Stroll is de jongste coureur ooit op het podium, na afloop laat de 18-jarige Williams-coureur weten geen woorden te hebben voor zijn prestatie.

Klein smetje op de podiumplaats is dat Stroll vlak voor het passeren van de finishlijn zijn tweede plaats verloor aan Mercedes-coureur Valtteri Bottas. Na afloop laat de jonge Stroll het volgende weten: "Ik heb hier geen woorden voor. Dit hadden we echt niet verwacht, maar het voelt heel erg goed. Het is heel bijzonder om hier te staan, zeker na zo'n bizzarre wedstrijd. Op een gegeven moment was de chaos compleet, maar we hielden het hoofd cool. In de slotfase was het nog hard werken, maar helaas kon ik Valtteri Bottas net niet achter mij houden. Ik ben hier heel erg blij mee."

Stroll werd door de fans ook gekozen tot 'Driver of the Day'. Het is voor het eerst dat de jonge Canadees deze eervolle vermelding van de fans krijgt.

Toen zijn entree in de F1 bekend werd gemaakt, heb ik geroepen dat ik hoopte dat hij zou falen, omdat ik hem als een paydriver beschouwde en totaal nog niet klaar voor F1 achtte.     Snelheid zat er goed in en heeft er hard voor moeten werken. Met alle druk geen fouten gemaakt en het is hem echt gegund. Jammer van Bottas. Als je naar de onboardbeelden keek zag het er ook veel rustiger uit. Op de goede weg Lance!

      Geluk? Hij reed na de herstart 17 seconden weg van de groep daarachter en reed nagenoeg hetzelfde tempo als Ricciardo in een Red Bull.

Ook heel veel leedvermaak gehad om als zijn uitvalbeurten in de eerste races. Maar dit is gewoon een fantastisch resultaat, en zijn hele weekend was al heel erg sterk. Zou het dan toch kunnen zijn dat hij veel meer talent heeft dan ik dacht? Zou het de eerste races dan toch vooral een zelfvertrouwending geweest zijn? Zou hij dan nu eindelijk echt ontketend zijn? Als dat zo is, dan neem ik al mijn bezwaren terug en dan hoort hij gewoon thuis in de F1. Deze podiumplek is in ieder geval hem heel erg gegund!
