Geen jubelstemming bij McLaren na eerste punten

Het team van McLaren sleepte in Azerbeidzjan de eerste punten van dit seizoen in de wacht. Fernando Alonso kwam in Bakoe als negende over de meet, waardoor zijn werkgever na acht races eindelijk van de hatelijke nul af is. Dat is voor racing director Eric Boullier nog geen reden voor een feestje. De Fransman neemt geen genoegen met slechts puntenfinishes.

Al is dit in elk geval een begin. Boullier: "Deze twee punten zijn een beloning voor al onze harde werk in de aanloop naar dit weekend. We wisten dat we elke kans met beide handen aan moesten grijpen en dat is precies wat we gedaan hebben. Fernando Alonso reed een fantastische race, benutte elke mogelijkheid en negende is nog een magere weerspiegeling van zijn prestatie in Bakoe."

"Stoffel Vandoorne kende eveneens een volwassen optreden. Hij had de snelheid om beide Saubers te passeren en in de top tien te eindigen, maar ze bleven steeds net buiten schot op het lange rechte stuk. Voor onze strategen, engineers en monteurs zijn deze punten een enorme opluchting. Dit is een opsteker terwijl wij toewerken naar betere tijden, hopelijk al in Oostenrijk."

Tegenover Autosport voegt hij toe: "Ik kan hier nog niet om lachen, ik ben niet blij met negende plaatsen. Dat is niet waarvoor ik race, dat is niet waarvoor McLaren racet. Het ziet er in elk geval beter uit voor het team dat we nu wat punten achter ons naam hebben staan."

  niet met Max dan want die reed minder ronden dan beide Mclaren coureurs, zelfs minder dan Alonso die 1x stilviel in de opwarmronde en 1 gp miste

  Voor McLaren goed dat ze eindelijk de eindstreep halen met twee punten. Boullier moet niet zo arrogant doen. Blij zijn met wat je hebt en niet wat had kunnen zijn.

  @Commando, ik vind niet dat hij arrogant is. Eerder objectief. Hij heeft in mijn ogen gewoon gelijk. Dit is niet waar Mclaren hoort te staan. Niemand had dit aan zien komen, maar onderhand mag je toch als McLaren eisen gaan stellen, aangezien het er niet beter op wordt.

  Beetje jammer dat ze zo druk bezig zijn om van Honda af te komen, dat ze niet eens blij zijn met de progressie die geboekt wordt.
  
  Twee auto's die de race hebben uitgereden, waarvan één in de punten, en een nieuwe PU die meer topsnelheid genereert.
  
  Als je McLaren's commentaren over de PU vergelijkt met die van Red Bull in 2015 over hun PU, dan was RB destijds uitermate subtiel ;)
