Carey: "Nooit gezegd dat we naar 25 races toe gaan"

Formule 1-baas Chase Carey spreekt tegen dat Liberty Media van zins is om de Formule 1-kalender uit te breiden naar 25 Grands Prix. Dat gerucht circuleert al sinds het moment dat het mediabedrijf de macht greep in de koningsklasse van de autosport. Fernando Alonso en Lewis Hamilton gaven al aan bij zoveel races per jaar te zullen stoppen, maar ze hoeven zich geen zorgen te maken.

Er liggen geen plannen voor een kalender met 25 evenementen. Carey deelde op Servus TV mede: "We hebben nooit gesuggereerd dat we naar 25 Formule 1-races per jaar toe zullen gaan. We hebben alleen de mogelijkheid voor meer Grands Prix, met bijvoorbeeld een extra race in de VS in New York of Miami, besproken. Feit is dat er volgend jaar 21 races zijn. 25, 23 of 22 races, dat is nog lang geen realiteit en ook geen onderwerp van discussie."

In plaats daarvan richt Liberty Media zich erop om de huidige evenementen te optimaliseren. Carey: "De 21 races op de Formule 1-kalender moet zo succesvol mogelijk zijn. De fans moeten genieten van een bezoek aan een Grand Prix. De races dienen bol te staan van de actie en daaromheen willen we entertainment in de vorm van muziek, tentoonstellingen en ga zo maar door creëren. We willen de mensen echt wat bieden. De focus ligt op het maximale uit de huidige races halen."

Fans in de schijnwerpers

De fans vormen een belangrijk bestanddeel van de strategie van Liberty. "We willen dat de fans in de schijnwerpers staan", legt Carey uit. "Dat is de afgelopen jaren een beetje verloren gegaan. De fans zijn enorm belangrijk, zowel de mensen die thuis via de televisie kijken als de toeschouwers langs de baan. We willen het publiek een unieke ervaring bieden en hen met de sport en met hun helden - de teams en coureurs - verbinden."

"De fans vormen het belangrijkste element. De sport is entertainment, het is er voor het vermaak van de fans. Niet iedereen kan op de startopstelling komen, een kijkje nemen in de pitboxen of door de paddock lopen; daar hebben we de ruimte niet voor. Toch kunnen we nog genoeg doen om de Formule 1 en de fans dichter bij elkaar te brengen."

Nou, van mij mogen het er 22 worden. En dan wel in NL. Ik denk of weet wel zeker dat het een grote publiekstrekker is. Als je ziet hoeveel fans er alleen op Max af komen. Vul daarnet eens de jarenlange algemene F1 fans bij plus alle internationale fans wat hier naar toe afreizen!!!

Heerlijk die frisse wind! 25 races? Van mij mag het. Kom maar op! Dan maar zonder die watjes van een Hamilton en Alonso. Er zijn genoeg coureurs die graag willen instappen!

  Passie voor je beroep is leuk. Enorm veel geld vangen ook. Maar het zijn gewoon mensen. Mensen die ook eventjes niet in de schijnwerpers willen staan maar gewoon even tot zichzelf willen komen. Gun jij het ze? Ze zijn immers al 90% van het jaar bezig met hun beroep. Ik weet zeker dat dat meer is dan jij. Ook voor 30 miljoen per jaar ga jij na een tijdje smachten naar vrije tijd.
