Toto Wolff: "Geluk was zeker een factor in mijn loopbaan"

Op F1.com geeft Mercedes-teambaas Toto Wolff een openhartig interview over alles wat hem bezig houdt. Niet over rijders, niet over de race of over de kampioenschappen, maar zijn persoonlijke leven, zijn zakeninstinct en het moment waarop hij erachter kwam dat hij geen topcoureur was.

Het interview wordt gehouden in Kaffee Landtmann, in het hart van Wenen, de plaats die hem een gevoel van 'thuis' geeft. Net als Red Bull Racing-collega Christian Horner redde hij het niet in de racewagen maar werd daarbuiten een belangrijke factor in de Formule 1. Wolff: "Het was zwaar om te moeten toegeven dat je nooit de top zal kunnen bereiken, maar dat is hopelijk ook een sterke kant: bijzonder eerlijk tegenover mijzelf zijn wat ik wel en niet kan doen." De eye-opener kwam in Formula Ford op de oude Oostenrijkse ring. Ik reed door de 'Bosch Bocht', een snelle bocht naar beneden en reed achter Alex Wurz. Ik had het gevoel dat ik goed aan het rijden was, maar toen ik zag wat Alez met de auto kon doen wist ik dat ik het nooit zou halen."

Zelf ziet hij het team als een middelgroot bedrijf. Het stelt niet veel voor als je kijkt naar de echte captains of industry en haalt daarbij Mercedes-Benz baas Dieter Zetsche aan. "Hij heeft met zoveel meer variabelen te maken, het is zoveel meer complexer. Wij zijn een bedrijf van gemiddelde grootte, niet meer", aldus de Oostenrijker.

Om zijn huidige positie te bereiken was volgens hem ook een dosis geluk nodig. Daarover zegt hij: "Als iemand zegt dat geluk geen factor was in zijn succesverhaal, dan is het niet waar. Ook bij mij speelde dat een rol: ik zat gelijk op dezelfde golflengte met Frank Williams. Om met Williams in 2012 met 'mad' Pastor Maldonado ene race te winnen en de interesse van Mercedes te wekken: dat was een aaneenschakeling van allemaal de juiste momenten. En natuurlijk het pad dat Ross Brawn was ingeslagen in 2012 heeft een grote impact op het succes van de afgelopen jaren gehad."

Toch was die bizarre overwinning van maldonado hoogst verdacht wat mij betreft. Bijzonder "toevallig" ook dat na de race de pitbox van williams in vlammen op ging. Ongeloofelijk dat er nooit een onderzoek naar de legaliteit gedaan is. Of is het bewijsmateriaal in vlammen opgegaan?

Ik sta er eigenlijk niet van te kijken dat uitgerekend Toto bij deze freak overwinning betrokken was. #oliegate

  Echt een ondoordacht commentaar, gezien je nick niet verrassend. Lees dit artikel eens en je weet meteen hoe hect de F1 is en dat er geen sprake is geweest van kwade opzet. Te meer omdat de auto van Pastor nog bij scruteneering stond. www.dailymail.co.u(...)s-teams-garage.html

  Dus jij vindt het heel normaal dat die rammelbak van een williams met een matige coureur heel normaal?
  
  Die williams was de race er voor gewoon een achterhoede auto. De race na de overwinning reed men ook weer in de achterhoede rond. Maar uutgerekend op barcelona, een circuit waar verassingen haast nooit voorkomen door het vele testen, kon williams zich ineens meten met alonso in de ferrari...

  Ach vorig jaar won een debutant voor een nieuw team in een auto waar hij nog nooit in had gereden. Dan is dat zeker ook verdacht.

Eigenlijk niks mis met zijn antwoorden.
Proef enige (terechte) trots, maar ook nuchtere kijk om zichzelf als rijden en bestuurder.
En ja, gelukkig heeft die man ook zichtbare emoties, dat maakt hem menselijker.
