Palmer: "Ik denk eerlijk gezegd niet aan volgend jaar"

Renault-coureur Jolyon Palmer moet in de tweede helft van dit seizoen heel wat laten zien om zijn Formule 1-toekomst veilig te stellen. De Brit maakte voor de zomerpauze weinig indruk en het wemelde al van de geruchten dat hij na de vakantie niet terug zou keren. Palmer is er in België echter gewoon bij en Renault heeft al laten weten dat hij het seizoen afmaakt.

Voor 2018 houdt de Franse renstal alle opties open. Zover kijkt Palmer zelf nog niet vooruit. "Ik denk eerlijk gezegd niet eens aan volgend jaar, ik ben volledig geconcentreerd op de rest van dit seizoen. We zijn pas halverwege deze jaargang. We hebben nog negen races te gaan en ik ben erop gefocust om elk weekend het optimale resultaat te behalen."

"Het is leuk om te horen dat Renault niet van plan is me tussentijds te vervangen. Ik bevind me in dezelfde positie als vorig jaar. Vorig seizoen pakte ik hetzelfde aan, ik focuste me op het moment en dacht niet aan dit jaar, maar alleen aan goede races. Ik begon beter te rijden en vervolgens pakte het allemaal goed uit. Dat ga ik nu proberen te herhalen."

"Vorig jaar was de tweede seizoenshelft stukken beter dan de eerste. Het moge duidelijk zijn dat ik hoop om nu hetzelfde te bewerkstelligen. Ik weet dat ik het kan. Het is gewoon een kwestie van keihard werken, pushen en resultaten boeken. Ik deed het vorig jaar, ik kan het dit jaar weer doen. De auto van nu is beter. Het is aan mij om het op de baan te laten zien."

Tja, jezelf dat vooral blijven vertellen Jolyon is goed voor je zelfvertrouwen... maar uiteindelijk draait het toch echt om wat je laat zien op de baan.
Dat je nog niet bezig bent met volgend jaar is overigens onzin, want anders zou je niet nu zo gefocused zijn op het feit dat je resultaten moet boeken om hetzelfde kunstje te herhalen wat je het jaar ervoor gedaan hebt (oftewel blijven rijden in de F1 voor Renault).

Zover kijkt Palmer nog niet vooruit maar hij is wel blij dat hij niet vervangen wordt. -> Contradictie!! En dan zegt ie : "Het is gewoon een kwestie van keihard werken, pushen en resultaten boeken." Waarom niet vanaf round 1?

De prestatie van Palmer in de F1 die mij het meest zal bijblijven is het spinnen op het rechte stuk in Monaco '16.
