Sauber-teambaas Vasseur: "Leclerc moet zich eerst focussen op F2-titel"

Charles Leclerc moet zich focussen op het winnen van de Formule 2-titel en daarna pas na gaan denken over een overstap naar de Formule 1. Dat is de mening van Sauber-teambaas Frederic Vasseur, het team waarmee de 19-jarige Fransman in verband wordt gebracht. 

Leclerc komt uit de stal van Ferrari en wordt daarom in verband gebracht met een stoeltje bij het team van Sauber dat volgend jaar met Ferrari-motoren rond zal rijden. Maar ondanks sterke geruchten wil Vasseur er nog niet over praten. Vasseur over de samenwerking met Ferrari: "De deal gaat over de powertrain, dat betekent de motor en de versnellingsbak. Daarna gaan we kijken of we de samenwerking ook op andere vlakken kunnen uitbreiden."

"Over de coureurs en dan met name Charles kan ik dit zeggen: ik denk dat hij zich moet focussen op het Formule 2-kampioenschap. Er zijn nog steeds een aantal races te rijden en het is nog te vroeg om hierover te praten", aldus de Fransman. Hij vervolgt: "Ik hoop dat we later hierover kunnen spreken, maar om eerlijk te zijn denk ik dat het ook voor Charles te vroeg is om hier over na te denken."

      Natuurlijk. Leclerc is the next best thing na Verstappen. Dat was al duidelijk toen hij het zitje van Max overnam bij Van Amersfoort. Als Vasseur hem niet binnenhaalt dan gaan de andere met hem aan de haal. Het is inderdaad al lang in kannen en kruiken en die titel haalt Leclerc nog binnen als de redt van het seizoen achteraan start.

      Nou, Vasseur heeft eerder gezegd, dat hij Leclerc wel zag zitten. Echter omdat hij nu terugroeit, kan dit erop duiden dat hij door Ferrari op de vingers is getikt en dat die een andere route voor hem in petto hebben (Haas?). Mocht dat het geval zijn, dan zie ik Giovinazzi eerder naar Sauber gaan.

      @Larryperkins: Reserve coureur en vrijdagtrainingen. Ferrari is Red Bull niet. die nemen meestal de langere weg.

      Daar is natuurlijk allang een klap op gegeven , ze krijgen bij Sauber niet voor niets een 2018 Ferrari blokje in die auto natuurlijk. Ericsson rijd volgend seizoen met tranen in zijn ogen rond, en het schijnt dat hij ook een nieuwe sponsordeal heeft afgesloten met Pampers ;)

      @Stitch. Dat geldt voor een broekie in de ‘hoofdmacht’ van Ferrari te zetten, niet om hem bij een ander team te stallen om zoveel mogelijk ervaring op te laten doen.
      Dat zijn twee compleet andere dingen.

    Ferrari klopt op de deur met een fikse korting op de motoren.

    "Sorry, waar was ik gebleven. Daarna gaan we kijken of en wanneer we het stoeltje van leclerc kunnen schuimen. Hij verdient een plek in de F1"

      Wehrlein is van Mercedes, de kans is nihil dat hij bij Sauber blijft.
      Ericsson heeft zijn sponsor, die ook aandeelhouder is van Sauber, dus die blijft wel zitten.
      Gewoon Leclerc-Ericsson volgend seizoen.

    Pascal Wehrlein weet al dat er volgend jaar geen plek voor hem als Mercedes coureur is bij Sauber-Ferrari (of Alfa Romeo F1 team). Er komt dus sowieso een Ferrari protegé in dat stoeltje.
