Perez droomt van een ereplaats voor eigen publiek

Force India-coureur Sergio Perez hoopt ooit nog eens in eigen land op het podium te eindigen, het liefst komende zondag al. Het moet voor een Mexicaan geweldig zijn om onder toeziend oog van duizenden landgenoten in het stadion op het Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez te Mexico City gehuldigd te worden, denkt hij. Voor eigen publiek racen is al een hele eer.

Perez vertelde aan de NOS: "Ik kan niet beschrijven hoe geweldig het is om zó te worden aangemoedigd. Een thuisrace is een voorrecht. Dat maken weinig coureurs mee. Ik heb altijd het gevoel dat mijn auto op dit circuit extra snel wordt. Vooral dat stuk dwars door het stadion is een belevenis. Na zo'n lang seizoen is het fijn even thuis te komen. Ik wil mijn fans hoe dan ook een geweldige zondag geven."

Hij stond dit seizoen nog niet op het podium. "Het wordt tijd. We hebben nog drie kansen, maar ik doe het het liefst hier. De mensenmenigte voor het podium in het stadion geeft me kippenvel. Ik kan alleen winnen als Mercedes, Ferrari en Red Bull pech hebben. Misschien kan het publiek een handje helpen. Nee, serieus: ik heb regen, een safety car of een wonder nodig. Of eigenlijk alle drie."

De Mexicaan denkt nog wel eens terug aan zijn eerste jaar in de GP2, aan de zijde van Giedo van der Garde bij Barwa Addax. "Giedo had al een berg ervaring toen ik bij Addax kwam. Ik kwam net kijken, maar moest dat jaar presteren. Mijn carrière hing van het gevecht met Giedo af. Als ik het dat jaar had verprutst, had ik de Formule 1 nooit gehaald."

Zijn vooralsnog enige kans bij een topteam, in 2013 bij McLaren, mislukte. Jo Ramirez, destijds teamcoördinator bij de Britse renstal, legt uit waarom: "Sergio dacht dat hij er al was. Hij gedroeg zich als een verwende vedette. Toen hij dat besefte, was het al te laat. Doodzonde. Het is mooi dat we een Mexicaanse Formule 1-coureur hebben, maar het had nog mooier kunnen zijn."

Volgend seizoen rijdt Perez net als dit jaar voor Force India. "Ik had twee alternatieven, maar dat waren geen serieuze opties. Daarom ben ik blij dat ik kan blijven. Er gebeuren dingen achter de schermen die me vertrouwen geven, maar waar ik nog niets over kan vertellen. Die dingen hebben vooral met financiën te maken. We hebben een laag budget, maar worden wel vierde in het kampioenschap voor constructeurs. Een optimale prestatie, maar met meer geld kunnen we een sprong maken."

Perez rijdt komend weekend in Mexico met een speciale helm om zijn door een aardbeving getroffen landgenoten een hart onder de riem te steken.

  Ja inderdaad.... Hij heeft zijn handen meer dan VOL aan Ocon. Ik zou maar beginnen met te dromen om hem te verslaan. Want te roepen ik kan sneller (zoals in US) en daarna op 6sec worden gezet door Ocon komt niet erg positief over. Maar succes het weekend maak er een mooie wedstrijd van Perez..

Petje af voor het team dat ze met zo weinig geld zo goed kunnen presteren. Het klinkt alsof hij zegt dat ze een geldschieter hebben gevonden.
