NASCAR en rally rijden gaan Alonso een stapje te ver

McLaren-coureur Fernando Alonso probeert zich zo breed mogelijk te ontwikkelen en oriënteert zich ook op racemogelijkheden buiten de Formule 1. Zo deed hij al mee aan de Indy 500, verschijnt hij in januari aan de start van de 24 uur van Daytona en heeft hij interesse voor de 24 uur van Le Mans.

Er zijn echter ook disciplines die niet op de belangstelling van de Spanjaard kunnen rekenen. Zoals bijvoorbeeld NASCAR. Alonso: "Dat zou een ontzettend grote uitdaging zijn. Die auto's zijn zo uniek, dat is nergens mee te vergelijken. Vooralsnog heb ik geen plannen om ooit NASCAR te gaan doen."

Dit geldt ook voor rally rijden. De tweevoudig wereldkampioen Formule 1 mocht ooit een dag als bijrijder mee met rallylegende Carlos Sainz senior. "Ik dacht dat ik die dag dood zou gaan. Nadat ik het overleefd had, realiseerde ik me dat rally rijden mooi is, maar dan wel voor rallycoureurs."

Kimi Raikkonen en Robert Kubica schuwden niet om zich te wagen aan het fenomeen rally rijden. Alonso begint er niet aan. "Ik zou nooit de mate van precisie en de gekte van doorgewinterde rallycoureurs kunnen bereiken. Ik voel me meer thuis op circuits dan op landweggetjes."

    Rally rijden is toch wel iets wat 'ie kan doen. NASCAR is een geheel aparte cultuur, waarvan ik me kan voorstellen dat Alonso zich daar niet in voelt passen, maar scheuren over zandpaden dat is leuk voor iedereen die wil racen.

      @Benpon wat ik lees is dat 'ie een slechte ervaring had als bijrijder tijdens een rally, maar ook vermeldt dat het mooi moet zijn voor de rijder zelf.

    Echte kerels als Kubica en Räikkönen durfden het wel aan om rally te rijden. Is Alonso soms bang dat z'n haar in de war raakt?

    Hij is ook absoluut niet uit het juiste racehout gesneden voor rally. Dat is meer iets voor koelbloedige killers.

    Dat van rally begrijp ik wel. Uitgerekend zijn F1 collega's hebben aangetoond dat je als circuitrijder daar weinig te zoeken hebt. Of je komt nergens (Raikkonen) of je eindigt als Kubica, en het gaat Alonso om winnen.
    Van Nascar lijkt vreemder, dat verschilt immers niet zo veel van Indy500. Maar ik denk dat Alonso eerlijk gezegd minder met Indycar op heeft dan ie doet voorkomen. Het is hem vooral te doen om de krenten in de pap. En kennelijk zitten er in Nascar te weinig krenten in.
