Leclerc vond het moeilijk om Sauber-geheim te bewaren

Charles Leclerc wist eerder dan de buitenwereld dat hij in 2018 zijn debuut zal maken in de Formule 1. Afgelopen weekend bevestigde Sauber de Formule 2-kampioen als een van de rijders voor komend seizoen. Dat viel wel te verwachten, maar pas sinds zaterdag is het officieel.

Op de vraag van Blick of hij het moeilijk vond om dat geheim te houden, antwoordde Leclerc: "Ja, dat was vrij moeilijk! Natuurlijk hoorde ik ook alle geruchten, maar het was zenuwslopend omdat de officiële aankondiging lang op zich liet wachten. Pas na de laatste testdag in Abu Dhabi wist ik het zeker."

Sauber was in 2017 met afstand het langzaamste team, maar dat deert de jonge Monegask niet. "Ik kijk heel erg uit naar mijn eerste Formule 1-race en ik vind het ook mooi om betrokken te zijn bij de terugkeer van Alfa Romeo in deze sport. Iedereen met een passie voor de Formule 1 weet dat Alfa Romeo in het verleden mijlpalen heeft bereikt in deze sport", aldus Leclerc.

Hij mag zich volgend jaar gaan meten met teamgenoot Marcus Ericsson, het lievelingetje van Sauber-eigenaar Longbow Finance. "Ik focus me gewoon op mezelf en hetgeen ik moet doen. We krijgen de nieuwste Ferrari-motoren, dat vertegenwoordigt al een aardige stap vooruit. Hopelijk geldt voor de auto hetzelfde, dan kunnen we komend seizoen een rol van betekenis spelen", besluit Leclerc.

  Alfa Romeo wordt titelsponsor van Sauber, ze leveren geen motoren. Wellicht rebatchen ze Ferrari motoren en ze leveren Sauber hun technische kennis en ervaring.

  Sauber betaalt geld aan Ferrari en Ferrari brengt de motoren gratis of met korting naar Sauber in ruil voor die sticker op de auto.

De laatste races kon sauber al een beetje meekomen met haas en torro rosso. Dat terwijl ze de sloomste motor van het veld hebben. De nieuwe Ferrari gaat een grote stap geven en als ze met de auto ook en stap maken (wat ik verwacht), dan kunnen ze vol
