Mercedes in gedachten niet bij andere rijders voor 2019

Mercedes-motorsportbaas Toto Wolff spreekt tegen dat hij voorzichtig al wat om zich heen aan het kijken is naar mogelijke vervangers voor Valtteri Bottas voor 2019. De Fin heeft een aardig eerste seizoen in dienst van de Duitse renstal achter de rug, maar hij kwam toch behoorlijk wat tekort ten opzichte van Lewis Hamilton. Bottas moet in 2018 meer de knuppel in het hoenderhok gooien.

Wolff bestrijdt echter al bezig te zijn met de opvolging van de drievoudig Grand Prix-winnaar. Geruchten dat Esteban Ocon na volgend jaar de oversteek maakt van Force India naar Mercedes zijn wat hem betreft dan ook erg voorbarig "Esteban is een van de coureurs uit ons opleidingsprogramma en zodoende automatisch in beeld, maar het hele team staat achter Valtteri", aldus Wolff in Turun Sanomat.

"Als we nu al na zouden denken over andere rijders voor 2019, zou dat betekenen dat we emotioneel gezien niet 100 procent achter Bottas staan. Dat is niet het geval, we staan wel achter hem. Ik kan jullie verzekeren dat iedereen binnen Mercedes, van directie tot de werkvloer, wil dat Valtteri slaagt. Samen met Lewis vormt hij ons rijdersduo en we zijn niet met onze gedachten bij anderen."

Bottas kwam begin dit jaar bij Mercedes als vervanger van Nico Rosberg. Wolff: "Valtteri moet uitvogelen waar hij het liet liggen in de weekenden dat hij niet opgewassen was tegen Lewis. Aan de andere kant is het belangrijk om te begrijpen waarom hij in andere Grands Prix wel de sterkere van de twee was, bijvoorbeeld in Sotsji. Valtteri heeft alles in zich. Het is voor hem alleen zaak om het hele pakket bij elkaar te brengen."

Het mag geen beklonken zaak zijn, maar natuurlijk zijn ze met de opvolging van Bottas bezig. En als ik onverhoopt mis zit met die voorspelling dan zijn ze erg amateuristisch bezig. Bottas is niet goed genoeg én Ocon is beter.

Bij Mercedes hebben ze zoveel vertrouwen in Bottas, dat ze hem op het nippertje maar liefst een éénjarige contractverlenging hebben gegeven.

Ocon zal zeker een zwaarder seizoen krijgen in 2018, en laat hij eerst maar eens Pérez zoek rijden, anders is het stoeltje van Mercedes nog heel ver weg. Pascal Wehrlein werd ook de hemel in geprezen door Toto, die is straks gewoon exit F1 ga ik even vanuit.

  John6: Mee eens en door zijn uitspraken deze week heeft hij zichzelf enorm veel druk op gelegd en niet alleen naar Perez maar naar alle (top) teams toe.
  Hij moet hierdoor wel oppassen voor valkuilen want Max gaat ook niet zomaar roepen dat hij sneller is als Lewis en dat is wel zo verstandig lijkt me.

Zo ingewikkeld is het toch niet ,Bottas heeft een éénjarig contract... Hij zal de ballen uit zn brandvrije broek moeten rijden anders zit er in 2019 gewoon een ander in zn stoeltje... Vraag is alleen hoe hoog Mercedes de lat legt als ze in 2018 gewoon weer (bijna) alles winnen en constructeurstitel pakken... Kan ook dat ze het wel best vinden zolang Hamilton nog rijdt....
