Bakoe roept coureurs op om ook in 2018 risico te nemen

De Grand Prix van Azerbeidzjan was dit seizoen een van de spectaculairste en meest meeslepende races van het jaar. Red Bull Racing-coureur Daniel Ricciardo boekte een onverwachte overwinning, Lance Stroll behaalde zijn eerste podiumplek in de Formule 1 en titelrivalen Lewis Hamilton en Sebastian Vettel lagen met elkaar in de clinch. Bakoe maakte zich met deze wedstrijd in één klap geliefd onder Formule 1-fans.

Nu is het zaak om dit in 2018 te bevestigen. Arif Rahimov, promotor van de Azerbeidzjaanse Grand Prix, doet een beroep op de rijders. "Onze race was dit seizoen waarschijnlijk de beste race van het seizoen. Ik weet niet hoeveel jaar het geleden is dat we zoveel actie in één Formule 1-race hebben gezien. Er waren zoveel incidenten, rode vlaggen, safety cars en alles. En een onverwacht einde. Daniel Ricciardo won de race en dat was goed, want het was onvoorspelbaar."

"We hebben een briljant tweede jaar achter de rug, met volop actie en een goede race. Voor ons derde jaar kan ik alleen maar hopen op meer van hetzelfde. We hebben dat niet geheel in eigen hand, hopelijk is de actie op de baan in 2018 weer om van te smullen. Wij doen ons best om naast de baan voor zoveel mogelijk entertainment te zorgen. We organiseren concerten die we wel naar binnen verplaatsen uit onzekerheid over de weersomstandigheden."

"Het belangrijkste is om het publiek, de televisiekijkers en de bezoekers ter plekke te vermaken met geweldige actie. Het eerste jaar was wat dat betreft een beetje rustig. De coureurs moesten de baan leren kennen en de bochten onder de knie krijgen. Nu kwamen ze terug met meer baankennis en dat leverde een prachtige race op. Mijn oproep aan de coureurs is om volgend jaar ook risico's te nemen en er vol voor te gaan om een net zo vermakelijke race af te werken als in 2017."

  Wat een reken-je-rijk commentaar. Bij F1 krijg je voor je 57 miljoen garantie tot aan de hoek. Bv het Abu Dhabi circuit kennen ze ook al jaren, en je ziet wat voor bagger je daarvoor terugkrijgt. Met een "So what?" commentaar van F1 ambassadeur Vettel als toetje. Dat dan weer wel.

Nogmaals, fout land, fout baantje, stoppen met die handel. Gaat natuurlijk niet gebeuren, want geld en sport stijgt boven mensenrechten uit. Verder iedereen fijne kerstdagen.
