Charles Leclerc, een volwassen en nuchtere katalysator

Charles Leclerc heeft heel wat mee moeten maken op weg naar de Formule 1. De Monegask verloor dit jaar zijn vader en het had weinig gescheeld of zijn sportieve loopbaan was helemaal niet van de grond gekomen. Op 13-jarige leeftijd had hij geen sponsors en het geld was op. "Eigenlijk moest ik stoppen met karten", liet Leclerc eens optekenen. Jules Bianchi ontfermde zich over hem en droeg hem aan bij de stal van manager Nicolas Todt. Die pikte hem op en de rest is geschiedenis.

Leclerc was dit jaar heer en meester in de Formule 2, nadat hij vorig jaar al de GP3-titel op zijn naam schreef. De 20-jarige Monegask debuteert komend seizoen bij Sauber in de Formule 1. Iedereen die met hem gewerkt heeft is lyrisch over het talent uit de Ferrari-opleiding. Frits van Amersfoort, zijn teambaas in de Formule 3 in 2015, vertelde aan de NOS: "Ik weet nog dat ik zei dat een talent als Max Verstappen eens in de twintig jaar langskomt. Maar een jaar later had ik er dus weer een."

De Monegask mocht vorig jaar wat vrije trainingen afwerken voor Haas F1 Team. Teambaas Günther Steiner stelt tegenover Auto Motor und Sport: "Charles is erg volwassen voor zijn leeftijd, hij is altijd nuchter gebleven. Hij komt uit een goed milieu en met Nicolas Todt heeft hij de juiste manager. Hij deed het goed voor ons. Je kunt niet veel conclusies verbinden aan de tijden uit een training. Als coureur rij je niet veel, de nadruk ligt op data verzamelen over de aerodynamica en de banden."

Frederic Vasseur, komend seizoen de teambaas van Leclerc bij Sauber, haakt daarop in: "Als vrijdagcoureur bouw je altijd wat reserves in. Het slechtste dat je kunt doen is de auto van een van de reguliere rijders in de prak rijden. Charles is een geweldige katalysator voor een team. Hij weet manschappen te verenigen zonder daarbij te soft te zijn. Hij motiveert de engineers en slaagt erin om het beste uit iedereen om hem heen te halen."

Met zoveel talent ziet de toekomst van de F1 er goed uit. Dat ondanks technische ontwikkelingen zoals de Halo.

  Motorkampioenschap: Volgend jaar 99% kans dat de standaard merc 1 2 fer 3 4 renault 5 6 is. Honda wil ik niet in 1 adem noemen, die zijn zo enorm kansloos.
  
  Het talent van goede coureurs word nu alleen maar verkwanseld. Naast de baan word bepaald wie er kampioen word. Je moet in de Merc zitten en je teamgenoot de baas zijn, in dat geval weet je dat een coureur als Lewis, Max, Vettel bijna zeker WK. Ferrari met PK's tekort en een beter chassis dan Mercedes maakt gewoon geen enkele kans. Het leek even zo maar dat was enkel omdat Mercedes een "Diva" had gebouwd en die moest leren kennen.

  @SanderF1 Welke criteria? Snelheid of betrouwbaarheid ? Costructeurs punten kan niet, zit imo teveel chassis bij.

Eigenlijk zie ik hem het liefst meteen in de Ferrari maar voor hem zelf is dit zeggen ze beter. Hoop echt dat hij zich in 2018 zo in de kijker kan rijden dat hij 2019 wel in de Ferrari zit. Ben Kimi zo moe gewoon bizar dat hij er volgend jaar gewoon nog steeds bij is.

  denk eerder dat als Haas beter is dan sauber dat voor 2019 Lecler naar Haas gaat en GIO naar Sauber

Leclerc is net zo goed als Max, de toekomst kan uitwijzen wie er beter is. Maar uit hetzelfde hout gesneden en kampioen pur sang.

  Dat klopt, Max himself zelfs. Wie in de winterseries kon zien dat Max potentieel F1 coureur ging worden kan nu zelfs zien dat Ocon zijn billen knijpt. iemand?
