Coronel: "Belachelijk als grid girls ophouden te bestaan"

Tom Coronel heeft geen goed woord over voor de afwegingen van de leiding van de Formule 1 om het fenomeen 'grid girls' af te schaffen. Sportief directeur Ross Brawn en Formule 1-baas Chase Carey verkondigden vorige week opeens dat ze het nut van de aanwezigheid van vrouwelijk schoon op de startopstelling in twijfel trekken. Coronel vindt dat bespottelijk.

De toerwagen-coureur en Ziggo Sport-analist steekt in het AD van wal: "Ik zou het echt serieus belachelijk vinden als dit gestopt wordt. Wat willen mannen? Het is heel simpel, mannen kijken graag naar raceauto's en naar mooie vrouwen. Het klinkt heel basic, maar ingewikkelder is het gewoon niet. Als er toch een bordje moet staan op de plek waar een auto moet komen, waarom zou je er dan een vent neerzetten? Het is gewoon mooi!"

"Er zijn ook heel veel vrouwen die graag naar mooie vrouwen kijken. Erbij in de buurt komen en ermee gezien worden, daar draait het uiteindelijk allemaal om. Ze genieten ervan, dus wie schaad je ermee? Helemaal niemand! Maar ja, je kunt niet iedereen tevreden stellen. Ik reis over de hele planeet en ik kom veel van die dames tegen. Het is voor mij het puntje op de i, en ik heb er altijd veel plezier aan beleefd en ik kan niet zonder. Het is genieten."

Seyda Kent uit Wormerveer draaft geregeld op als grid girl bij een evenement op Zandvoort en zij snapt ook niet zo goed waar de ophef plotseling vandaan komt. "Als grid girl is onze belangrijkste taak het aanwijzen van de startplek voor de coureurs. Daarvoor is een mooi gezichtje alleen niet genoeg, maar je moet ook toegewijd zijn en goed kunnen samenwerken. De afgelopen jaren heb ik met heel vriendelijke en goed opgeleide vrouwen samen mogen werken. Je moet niet alleen naar de buitenkant kijken, ons uiterlijk bepaalt niet wie wij zijn."

      Het is kennelijk veel meer dan alleen een bordje vasthouden.
      Britse Chantel George werkt al 10 jaar als Grid Girl.
      " "Ik was in 2014 Grid Girl voor Kimi Räikkönen en het was de mooiste ervaring uit mijn leven! Je wordt vorstelijk behandeld door het team en het is een geweldige ervaring om de coureurs te ontmoeten."
      Het is volgens de 30-jarige Chantel niet zo simpel als het lijkt: "Je maakt lange dagen, vaak van 6 uur 's ochtends tot 5 uur 's middags."

      Nou echt he, iedereen op zijn achterste benen om een paar vrouwen die ze (sowieso al) missen.

      Kijk, van mij hoeven ze niet weg maar ik denk dat als jij niet elk raceweekend in de paddocks loopt (dus als gewone Jan Boerel*l via de tv naar de races kijkt) je amper wat gaat missen. Loop je wel in die paddock dan zie die vrouwen misschien wat vaker en meer of heb je er een praatje mee maar als ik het zo zie op tv loopt iedereen daar druk zijn/haar programma af te werken en daar horen die vrouwen niet bij ;-)

    Mooie vrouwen en mooie auto's gaan in het luxe wereldje vaak samen. De mooie vrouwen worden afgeschaft en de auto's lelijk gemaakt. Dat heet ontwikkeling.

    Bij het darten was de discussie om de walk on girls af te schaffen heel snel voorbij. PDC voorzitter Barry Hearn en de walk on girls wilden er helemaal niks van weten zelfs. Grid girlds horen bij het racen, zolang die meiden het leuk vinden om te doen heb ik er ook geen enkele moeite mee ;)
