Horner: "Zien maar topje van de ijsberg met esports"

De Formule 1 heeft dit jaar voorzichtig wat eerste schreden gezet in de wereld van de esports. McLaren lanceerde een eigen competitie genaamd 'World's Fastest Gamer', met een contract als simulatorcoureur als beloning voor de winnaar. De Formule 1 zelf organiseerde ook een eigen esports-competitie, met de grote finale in het weekend van de Grand Prix van Abu Dhabi.

Red Bull houdt zich nog een beetje afzijdig, al zou er binnen het energiedrankenfabrikant een beweging op gang aan het komen zijn voor een eigen esports-competitie. Red Bull Racing-teambaas Christian Horner beseft dat gaming een grote impact heeft op de jeugd van tegenwoordig. "Het is ontzettend belangrijk. Er zijn globaal al zoveel mensen betrokken bij esports."

"Neem bijvoorbeeld de Premier League, daar wordt al zoveel mee gedaan. Max Verstappen is ook vaak bezig om op FIFA spelers te kopen en verkopen wanneer hij even niet in de simulator zit. Het is een generatiekwestie, voor de jeugd van vandaag de dag vormt esports een sleutelelement. We zien in de Formule 1 nog maar het topje van de ijsberg wat dat betreft."
