WEC-avontuur houdt Alonso scherp voor Formule 1

McLaren-directeur Eric Boullier gelooft dat de waarschijnlijke optredens van Fernando Alonso in het World Endurance Championship in 2018 zijn wedstrijdscherpte voor de Formule 1 alleen maar ten goede zullen komen. De verwachting is dat Alonso onderdeel uitmaakt van de line-up van Toyota voor komend seizoen. De Spanjaard zou het WEC kunnen combineren met de Formule 1.

Alleen de 6 uur van Fuji valt samen met de Grand Prix van de Verenigde Staten. Boullier vertrouwde RACER toe: "Er is komend jaar maar één clash tussen de Formule 1 en het WEC. Verder zijn het maar drie races en de 24 uur van Le Mans, dus zoveel drukker zou zijn schema niet worden. Fernando doet al overal mee aan allerlei kartraces. Hij is iemand die moet racen, de boog moet gespannen blijven."

"Veel coureurs zijn zo, dat zijn echte rijders als ik ze zo mag noemen. Ze zouden vijftig weekenden per jaar racen als ze daar de mogelijkheid voor kregen. Het houdt ze fit en alert, daardoor blijven ze op hun best. Als ze niet genoeg racen, dan raken ze hun scherpte kwijt. Daarom denk ik dat dit goed zou zijn voor Alonso, rijden in een competitieve omgeving houdt hem scherp voor de Formule 1."

Alonso testte in november al voor het LMP1-team van Toyota in Bahrein. De tweevoudig wereldkampioen Formule 1 liet daarbij een goede indruk achter. Toyota zal begin 2018 de line-up voor het komende WEC-seizoen bekendmaken.

Ik dacht dat Alonso als eerste stond te klagen bij de melding dat LM in de toekomst het aantal F1 races zou optrekken. Bij 25 of zo zou hij F1 voor bekeken houden.

Wat is het nu?
