Combineert Sirotkin de F1 met optreden in Le Mans?

Sergey Sirotkin verzekerde zich vorige week van een debuut in de Formule 1. De Rus racet komend seizoen voor het team van Williams. Die overeenkomst kwam mede tot stand met de hulp (en het geld) van SMP Racing, het autosportprogramma van SMP Bank.

SMP is ook in andere takken van autosport actief. De Russische bank overweegt nu om Sirotkin ook voor de 24 uur van Le Mans in te zetten. De 22-jarige coureur zegt niet bij voorbaat nee. "Ik zal een bijdrage leveren aan de ontwikkeling van de BR1-prototype. Wat betreft de 24 uur van Le Mans, dat is niet alleen van mij afhankelijk. Ik vind het in elk geval zeer interessant, al geniet de Formule 1 natuurlijk de prioriteit."

Op Le Mans komt hij dan mogelijk Daniil Kvyat, de vorige Formule 1-coureur uit Rusland, tegen bij SMP Racing. Kvyat is vorig jaar aan de kant geschoven door Red Bull/Toro Rosso. De Rus vond voor 2018 onderdak bij Ferrari, als ontwikkelingscoureur. SMP-baas Boris Rotenberg verklaarde aan Sport FM: "Ik weet niet hoe druk Daniil het krijgt bij Ferrari, maar ik zou hem graag voor ons team zien racen op Le Mans."

SMP Racing is in het World Endurance Championship actief in de LMP2-klasse. De 24 uur van Le Mans staat dit jaar voor 16 en 17 juni op het programma.
