Kristensen bewondert deelname Alonso aan 24 uur Le Mans

Fernando Alonso krijgt in zijn streven om de Triple Crown (winst in de Grand Prix van Monaco, de Indy 500 en de 24 uur van Le Mans) te winnen steun van niemand minder dan Tom Kristensen. De negenvoudig winnaar van de Franse 24-uursrace bewondert de poging van de tweevoudig wereldkampioen Formule 1.

"Ik bewonder de manier waarop Fernando met racen omgaat", vertelt Kristensen aan F1i.com. "Hij heeft een passie voor autosport als geheel en niet alleen voor zijn carrière in de Formule 1. Hij heeft de Indy 500 en de 24 uur van Daytona gereden en nu prepareert hij zich voor Le Mans. Daarover is weet hij heel veel. Door de jaren heen heb ik een aantal keer met hem gesproken en hij toonde altijd veel interesse in het evenement. Toen hij de prototypes zag, vond hij ze ongelooflijk interessant."

Tijdens de 24 uur van Daytona deed Alonso voor het eerst mee aan een langeafstandsrace. De eindklassering (positie 38 met teamgenoten Phil Hanson en Lando Norris) was daar achteraf bezien niet bijzonder van belang, want de Spanjaard deed vooral ervaring op in het draaien van drie uur durende stints. Ook reed Alonso een tijd in de nacht. Zelf zal Kristensen echter niet meer terugkeren. "Deze uitdaging is absoluut geweldig. Als je in een ritme komt en de auto goed presteert, is er niks beters. Ik ben nu echter 50 geworden, dus ik kan het nu makkelijk loslaten en aanschouwen."

Kristensen komt komend weekend wel weer in actie tijdens de Race of Champions. In Riyad zal de Deen onder andere Juan Pablo Montoya, David Coulthard en Helio Castroneves tegenkomen. Formule 1-coureurs ontbreken echter, mogelijk door het ongeluk van Pascal Wehrlein afgelopen jaar. De Duitser miste daardoor de eerste twee Formule 1-races. Voor Kristensen is de RoC echter een mooie gelegenheid om zich in verschillende auto's met coureurs uit andere disciplines te meten. Diezelfde geest laat Alonso zien door aan de Indy 500, de 24 uur van Daytona en de 24 uur van Le Mans mee te doen, zo redeneert de voormalig fabriekscoureur van Audi. "Deze soort veelzijdigheid zag ik toen ik opgroeide en keek naar grootheden als Mario Andretti en Jacky Ickx. Dat geldt ook voor anderen met wie ik streed in verschillende soorten autosport. Het laat de echte geest van racen zien."

Hoe speciaal het is wat Alonso doet is, blijkt wel uit het feit dat je tot Mario Andretti en Jacky Ickx terug moet gaan in de geschiedenis om dergelijke veelzijdige coureurs tegen te komen.
