Kubica overweegt deelname aan 24 uur van Le Mans

Robert Kubica verschijnt dit jaar mogelijk aan de start van de 24 uur van Le Mans. De Pool test deze week met een LMP1-bolide van Manor in Spanje, bericht de Spaanse krant Marca. De 24 uur van Le Mans zou voor Kubica te combineren zijn met zijn werkzaamheden voor Williams.

Als test- en reservecoureur krijgt hij het komend seizoen druk zat. Aan Auto Hebdo verkondigde Kubica: "Ik kom tijdens de voorbereiding en de in-season tests in actie, want het is belangrijk om de mogelijkheid te krijgen om te rijden. Het is misschien niet waar we op hoopten, maar ik keer wel met een belangrijke functie terug in de paddock. Ik krijg niet heel veel tijd in de Formule 1-auto, maar er komen goede kansen. Dit opent weer deuren richting de toekomst."

Tegenover L'Equipe voegt hij eraan toe: "Ik had natuurlijk liever geracet dit jaar, maar twaalf maanden geleden had niemand zich voor kunnen stellen dat ik me nu in deze positie zou bevinden. Ik weet beter dan wie dan ook waar ik sta, wat ik nodig heb en waar ik nog aan moet werken."

De 24 uur van Le Mans staat dit jaar in het weekend van 16 en 17 juni, tussen de Grands Prix van Canada en Frankrijk in. McLaren-rijder Fernando Alonso doet sowieso mee namens Toyota. Naast zijn testinzet en eventueel de 24 uur van Le Mans neemt Kubica dit jaar ook drie vrijdagtrainingen voor zijn rekening; in Spanje, Oostenrijk en (waarschijnlijk) Abu Dhabi.
