Na Formule 1-carrière ziet Magnussen IndyCar wel zitten

Fernando Alonso deed vorig jaar mee aan de Indy 500 en Lewis Hamilton gaf later ook aan interesse te hebben om aan die race deel te nemen. Toch heeft Kevin Magnussen de meest serieuze plannen voor een Amerikaans avontuur: na zijn Formule 1-carrière ziet hij een overstap naar de IndyCar Series wel zitten.

Magnussen is pas 25 en begint aan zijn vierde seizoen in de Formule 1, maar voor de Deen is het desondanks niet te vroeg om al te denken aan het leven na de Formule 1. In gesprek met Crash.net onthulde hij dat deelname aan de IndyCar Series een serieuze optie voor hem is. "Ik zou het graag willen. De Formule 1 zou ik er niet voor opgeven, maar ik wil graag in Amerika rijden. Soms droom ik daar 's nachts wel eens over. Het heeft me dus in zijn greep."

"Het zou mijn volledige focus nodig hebben en ik zou ook meer willen doen dan alleen de Indy 500. Als ik het doe, dan wil ik een volledig seizoen draaien. Of ik die kans ook krijg, dat weet ik niet. Misschien race ik nog wel vijftien jaar in de Formule 1; zou ik het daarna ook nog willen doen? Misschien, maar misschien ook niet."

Het had niet veel gescheeld, of Magnussen was al actief geweest in de IndyCar Series. In 2015 leek een stap naar Andretti Autosport dichtbij, maar toenmalige werkgever McLaren stak daar destijds een stokje voor. "Ik ging naar Andretti in Indianapolis, had daar gesprekken en er was bijna groen licht. Van McLaren kreeg ik echter niet de steun die ik nodig had. Voorheen steunden ze mij altijd erg goed, maar ik moet toegeven dat ze op dat moment geen goed werk afleverden."

Kan hij niet proberen om dit jaar al een plekje te krijgen samen met Ericsson? Als dan ook nog Maldonado daar gaat rijden dan kijk ik iedere wedstrijd! :-)

voelt hij aan dat het wel eens snel voorbij kan zijn in de F1 ?
Beetje vreemde uitspraak als je denkt nog jaren in de F1 te blijven rijden

  Zoals altijd is dit natuurlijk niet iets dat Magnussen zomaar in het wild roept, daar is een aanleiding voor en dat zal voornamelijk komen doordat een journalist hem een vraag stelt.
  Dus hij geeft gewoon antwoord.
  
  Ik ben geen fan van Magnussen dus wat mij betreft vertrekt hij voor het seizoen begint maar ik vrees dat we het nog minimaal een jaar met hem moeten doen in F1.

  Ja inderdaad, net alsof hij denk: laat ik maar een beetje slijmen met de Indycar, zodat ik aanbiedingen krijg van die teams voor het geval ze mijn contract niet verlengen

Vooral op ovals zal hij zich dan toch beter moeten gedragen want de schijt aan alles rijstijl die hij heeft is anders levensgevaarlijk op ovals...
