Sergio Perez: "Te vroeg om blij of teleurgesteld te zijn"

Force India vliegt behoorlijk onder de radar tot nu tijdens de wintertests op het Circuit de Catalunya nabij Barcelona. De Indiase renstal lijkt wat gezakt in de pikorde en voorbij gestreefd te zijn door andere teams uit de middenmoot, maar schijn kan bedriegen. Force India-coureur Sergio Perez kan er na de eerste testdag onder goede weersomstandigheden ook nog weinig over zeggen.

De Mexicaan reed 93 ronden en liet de tiende tijd noteren. Alleen Marcus Ericsson, de onfortuinlijke Stoffel Vandoorne en Lance Stroll waren langzamer. Perez: "Afgaande op de rondetijden is het veld meer naar elkaar toegegroeid en de middenmoot is compacter dan ooit, maar verder valt er nog weinig op te maken uit de tests tot nu toe. De komende dagen verwacht ik meer serieuze runs met lichte auto's."

"Het is moeilijk om een inschatting te maken van waar we nu staan. Ik zie ons niet uit middenmoot wegzakken, maar of we weer beste van de rest zullen zijn? We zullen in Melbourne wel zien waar we met ons pakket staan. En dan nog; het gaat er niet om waar je begint, maar waar je eindigt. Het is nu nog te vroeg om blij of teleurgesteld te zijn over onze klassering."

Perez plaatste wel een kanttekening bij de nieuwe asfaltlaag in Barcelona. Niet dat die slecht is, maar het nieuwe asfalt maakt het moeilijk om gegevens te vergelijken. "Het was een interessante dag waarop we veel data en informatie hebben verzameld, daar ben ik tevreden mee. Het is alleen lastig om een oordeel te vellen. Je weet niet of je rondetijden bij de auto vandaan komen of bij het wegdek, het weer of de banden."

Punten pakken de eerste races, doorontwikkelen zoals FI altijd doet. Komt wel goed met deze jongens, aan de coureurs ligt het niet.
In gekke (regen)races staan ze er gegarandeerd, zeker vergeleken met andere concurrenten:

Williams: prutsers eersteklas
STR: 2 rookies
Mclaren: onbetrouwbaar, dus valt uit
Haas: hangt van de windrichting af, zullen alleen maar afzakken gedurende een seizoen
Sauber: laatste op de grid

Hoeven zich dus alleen zorgen te maken over Merc, RBR, Ferrari en Renault en netjes daarachter te finishen. 1 ding is zeker: de Mercedes gaat nooit kapot, dat voordeel hebben ze al.
