Leclerc: "Ik moet meer vertrouwen opbouwen in raceruns"

Racesimulaties zullen op de laatste testdag van Charles Leclerc een belangrijke rol spelen. De Sauber-debutant heeft zich tot doel gesteld om zichzelf te verbeteren op dat aspect en het ook beter wil leren begrijpen.

Vrijdag zal Leclerc weer achter het stuur van de C37 kruipen. Op woensdag zat de Monegask ook achter het stuur van de Sauber: toen reed hij 130 ronden. Het enige grote punt op de agenda van Leclerc zal vrijdag de racesimulatie zijn, zo verklaarde hij woensdagavond aan de verzamelde pers. "Ik hoop meer vertrouwen te krijgen tijdens een racerun. Daaronder valt de setup, de lengte van de race, hoe ik de banden goed moet beheren, de pitstops en de strategie. Dat zal voor mij een belangrijk punt zijn op de laatste dag. Daar moet ik me nog op richten om volledig klaar te zijn voor Melbourne. De kwalificatie heeft voor mij niet de hoogste prioriteit."

Sauber-teambaas Frederic Vasseur sprak de hoop uit dat zijn team in 2018 mee kan strijden in de middenmoot. Volgens Leclerc is het nog lastig te zeggen of en wanneer dat mogelijk is. "We zullen zien, maar het doel is absoluut om gedurende het jaar te verbeteren en zo snel mogelijk aansluiting te vinden met de middenmoot. Het is best lastig in te schatten waar we momenteel staan. Op de tijdlijsten ziet het er goed uit, maar ook onduidelijke factoren als brandstof spelen daarbij mee. We zullen het zien tijdens de eerste race, maar voor nu werken we goed en als we zo doorgaan, komen de resultaten vanzelf."

Wel erg zonde dat dergelijk talent moet rond tuffen in een Sauber. Werd toch veel meer verwacht van Sauber met een Ferrari motor van heden jaar en completer sportiever Aero pakket maar ze blijken vooralsnog de hekkensluiter te zijn . Kan alleen zijn stempel drukken op een succesvol seizoen als hij elke race Marcus Ericsson weet te verslaan wat dat is hij aan z’n stand verplicht. Had hem liever bij Haas gezien i.p.v. die zeurmiep Grosjean. Gemiste kans Gené.

  Sauber heeft een flinke sprong gemaakt denk ik. Het probleem is dat ze van heel ver moeten komen.

  Wat verwacht je ervan Sauber was meer dood dan levend. Ze hebben nu dan wel een 2018 motor maar de rest is gewoon matig en alle aero die ze van Ferrari mogen kopen is van vorig jaar. Middenmoot zit dicht bij elkaar vorig jaar omdat ze geen van allen de middelen hebben om met iets onderscheidende vinding te komen en blijven ze dus dicht bij elkaar. Daarom is het zo knap van Force India om elk jaar echt vooruit te gaan met ook beperkte middelen maar natuurlijk nog een rijk team vergeleken met Sauber.
  
  Leclerc moet gewoon de auto in een belachelijk snel tempo beheersen en zijn teamgenoot verpulveren wil hij indruk maken na de Verstappen entree. Zo goed dat hij Ferrari tot unicum dwingt en volgend jaar de uitgerangeerde Kimi vervangt voor een jonkie.
