Sauber voor punten afhankelijk van flinke dosis geluk

Het team van Sauber beschikt dit jaar over de steun van Alfa Romeo, maar dat betekent allerminst dat de Zwitserse renstal van de ene op de andere dag uit zal groeien tot podiumklant. Sauber moet al blij zijn als ze punten scoren. Debutant Charles Leclerc liet zich ontglippen dat hij binnen de eerste twee races al in de punten wil eindigen.

Jeugdige overmoed, lacht Sauber-teambaas Frederic Vasseur tegenover RMC. Hij weet dat zijn team afhankelijk is van een flinke portie geluk. "Met het niveau dat wij halen, is het om punten te scoren noodzakelijk dat anderen in de problemen komen. Charles beseft dat zelf ook wel. Hij koppelt zijn intelligentie aan eerlijkheid, waardoor hij nu nog lekker opportunistisch kan zijn."

Sauber zal tijd nodig hebben om weer uit te groeien tot solide middenmoter. Vasseur vervolgt: "Mercedes had vijf jaar nodig voordat ze de titel veroverden. Het kostte Red Bull Racing zelfs zeven jaar. Zo is het leven, ook voor grote bedrijven. We weten dat we morgenochtend niks zullen doen, maar toch moeten we al in de aanval gaan. Die aanval moet eigenlijk gisteren al ingezet zijn."

"We zullen een kleine stap voorwaarts zetten met de motor, maar de meeste progressie hebben we deze winter geboekt met de identiteit van Sauber. We hebben bijvoorbeeld veel nieuwe sponsors binnen gehengeld en ook met het werven van nieuw personeel zien we dat steeds meer mensen in ons project geloven. Ik heb nog nooit zoveel cv's ontvangen van engineers die onderdeel willen uitmaken van dit avontuur."

Sauber gaat zeker punten pakken, 961pk man.. een mooie linery en een Ericsson aan boord;) is wel niet de nieuwste maar toch. Leclerc gaat de oren wassen van z’n teamgenoot want ik geloof niet dat Marcus met al zijn ervaring deze Monegask de baas is.

Kom kom, dan toch liever het oppurtunisme , noem het jeudige overmoed, van Leclerc dan het fatalisme van Vasseur, gewoon een beetje bluffen mag best als teambaas. Al is het alleen maar om Williams zenuwachtig te maken... :)

De powerunit hebben ze nu. En Leclerc. Nu moeten ze de wagen nog goed genoeg zien te krijgen, zo goed dat je het voordeel van die motor er ook uit kunt halen. En dat zal best wel wat tijd kosten, en geld. Maar als Sauber nu met de steun van Alfa/Ferrari ook weer wat aantrekkelijker kan worden voor sponsoren en goed personeel, dan kunnen ze de weg naar voren wel weer vinden. Maar dat zal wel een lange weg worden.
