Kubica beschouwt zich niet als mentor voor Williams-duo

Robert Kubica ziet zichzelf niet als de leermeester van de jonge Williams-coureurs Lance Stroll en Sergey Sirotkin, al is de Pool natuurlijk wel bereid om zijn kennis met het onervaren duo te delen. Maar alleen als Stroll en Sirotkin daar zelf behoefte aan hebben. Vooralsnog stapt Stroll vaker op Kubica af dan Sirotkin.

"Ik zou het niet formuleren alsof ik hun mentor ben en zij mijn leerlingen", deelde Kubica aan TVP Sport mede. "Maar ze hebben weinig ervaring, zoals iedereen die net begint. De Formule 1 is een gecompliceerde sport. Lance en Sergey komen bij mij als ze vragen hebben, Stroll meer dan Sirotkin. Dat is niks persoonlijks ten opzichte van Sergey. Misschien komt het doordat Stroll al een jaar Formule 1-ervaring heeft en beter weet wat hij moet vragen."

Sirotkin gaf tegenover Russische media toe dat zijn optreden en dat van Williams in Australië teleurstellend was. "We hadden meer van het weekend in Melbourne verwacht. Specifieker, ik had meer van mezelf verwacht. Al was het minder slecht dan het in de kwalificatie leek, dus we koesteren goede hoop dat we op korte termijn vooruitgang kunnen boeken."

"Het doel is om een voet tussen de deur te krijgen bij de grote groep in de middenmoot, waardoor we het tweede deel van de kwalificatie kunnen halen, kunnen knokken om Q3 te bereiken en kunnen vechten voor punten. Daar waren we in Australië ver van verwijderd. Ik hoop dat het een van de weekenden was waar je in een seizoen altijd tegenaan loopt en waarin niks lukt."

  Beetje domme reactie F1Fan1993... Kubica is een serieus goede coureur die in vele klasses heeft gereden en een CV heeft die beter is als die van Stroll en Sirotkin bij elkaar opgeteld. Ze kunnen dus wel degelijk veel van hem leren ondanks dat hij al een tijdje ‘droog’ staat qua F1 races. Alleen al zijn doorzettingsvermogen is bewonderenswaardig!
