Valtteri Bottas: "Het was een slecht weekend, meer niet"

Mercedes-coureur Valtteri Bottas spreekt tegen dat de druk op hem om te presteren is toegenomen na het tegenvallende weekend in Australië. De Fin crashte tijdens Q3 en de schade aan zijn auto was dusdanig groot dat het team de versnellingsbak moest vervangen, wat hem een grid penalty opleverde. Het zorgde ervoor dat hij de race vanaf P15 moest aanvangen.

In de race kwam Bottas niet verder dan een achtste plaats. Teleurstellend gezien zijn materiaal, maar zelfs voor hem was inhalen een schier onmogelijke opgave op Albert Park. De Fin laat zich niet kisten. "Ik heb er de afgelopen anderhalve week nauwelijks bij stilgestaan, omdat alles al tijdens het weekend verwerkt was. Het was een slecht weekend, meer niet."

"We hebben nog twintig races te gaan dit seizoen en nu zijn we in Bahrein voor de tweede Grand Prix van het jaar. Ik hoef me dus nog nergens zorgen om te maken. We hebben een competitieve auto. We weten dat we nog veel kunnen doen om pakket beter te maken. Australië was een slecht weekend, dus ik kijk ernaar uit om me in Bahrein te revancheren."

Hoe schat hij de kansen van Mercedes in voor de Grand Prix van zondag? "Het is gissen. Historisch gezien is Ferrari altijd snel hier. Ze hadden een goede wedstrijdsnelheid in Australië. Vorig jaar waren ze in Bahrein beter dan in Melbourne, dus ik denk dat ze een bedreiging zullen vormen en dicht in de buurt van ons zullen staan. En voor Red Bull Racing zou hetzelfde kunnen gelden. Verder kan ik er nog weinig over zeggen, we zullen zien hoe het weekend zich ontvouwt", aldus Bottas.

Bottas knakt onder de drukl, ik heb het voorspeld en bij race 1 was het gelijk raak.
Hij heeft 2-3 races op rij winnen nodig om zijn zelf vertrouwen een boost te geven. Maar j, Met Lewis naast hem?? nehhhh wordt h'm niet.

  Op basis waarvan verwacht je dat Ocon beter is dan Bottas? Ocon deed het super in de F3 maar het lijkt erop dat hij in de F1 iets meer op zijn plaats is gezet en in een groep middenklasse coureurs hoort die na de 4 beste toppers komt. Misschien komt hij in een positie om verder te groeien maar hoe verder een coureur naar voren wil hoe evenredig minder er kansen zijn om dat te realiseren. Met Ricciardo als mogelijke kandidaat, wordt het voor Ocon lastig om zich te verbeteren. Daarbij komt dat de FI het naar zich laat zien dit jaar erg moeilijk gaat krijgen.

Ook wel weer fijn een subtopper in een Mercedes. Rosberg was meer gewaagd aan Hamilton en het resultaat was bijna overal 1-2 Mercedes....

  Weet je wat het is, Bottas is geen inhaaltalent. Het inhalen moet je leren in de junior series en in de karts. Bottas wil dat nu gaan doen, door agressiever te rijden en dan gaat het mis.
  Bottas kan wel degelijk hard rijden. Maar hij moet niet gaan overdriven om Hamilton te verslaan. Dat is het moment dat hij fouten gaat maken.

Als je bij een team als Mercedes zit en zo presteert al een jaar, moet je plaats maken voor een betere coureur.... hij is gewoon geen killer niet voor zich zelf en niet voor een ander... misschien beter naar (bang) haasje

  Bottas is niet te bang maar realistisch. Zodra hij probeert om een geniale actie uit te voeren gaat het mis en maakt hij brokken. Zijn wagenbeheersing bij onverwachte acties is minder dan bij Hamilton en Verstappen.
