Zak Brown: "McLaren stapt mogelijk in andere raceklassen"

Als de budgetten in de Formule 1 naar beneden gaan zal McLaren gaan overwegen om ook in andere raceklassen in te stappen. Dat zegt McLaren CEO Zak Brown. Zijn coureur Fernando Alonso is al actief in andere raceklassen; naast de Formule 1 neemt hij ook deel met Toyota in het WEC, terwijl hij afgelopen jaar de Indy 500 reed.

Volgens Brown is dat een belangrijke markt voor McLaren: "Nu we in de Formule 1 kijken naar beperkte budgetten zijn we aan het kijken of we in de toekomst ook in andere raceklassen actief kunnen worden. Het zou voor ons heel interessant zijn om bijvoorbeeld deel te nemen aan de 24-uurs race in Le Mans en deze te kunnen winnen."

"Onze aandeelhouders houden van onze ideeën, zolang die ook financieel haalbaar zijn en logisch zijn voor het merk McLaren. Uiteraard moet er ook het nodige succes geboekt worden op de circuits."

    Als ik het goed begrijp is dit dus - anders dan Ferrari doet - geen dreigement, maar een manier om vrijgekomen gelden over andere klassen te verspreiden. Elders las ik dat McLaren met name interesse heeft in Indycar.

    Ik gok op Indy en WEC... met Alonso als coureur en ambassadeur en later een rolletje (na zijn pensioen) als adviseur en/of teambaas van één van die teams

    Waarom niet meteen beste Zak Brown. Door een chronisch gebrek aan sponsoren - toch dé reden waarvoor Zak is aangenomen - valt McLaren nu al in de categorie teams die niks gaan merken van een eventuele budgetlimiet...

      MJa..maar denk je niet dat op den duur er wel eens wat resultaten mogen komen? Ik bedoel, Sjeik Mohammed bin Essa Al Khalifa van Bahrein zal toch op termijn ook wat plezier aan zijn 'speeltje' willen beleven.

    Vanaf 2020 komt er een nieuwe Lmp1 klasse dat waarschijnlijk de naam GTP gaat dragen. Je moet daarbij denken aan een auto die qua motor vermogen evenveel pk's als een Lmp1 Hybride moet hebben (900pk+) maar qua uiterlijk meer gemeen moet hebben met de straatversies van de fabrikant.

      Toegevoegd: de fabrikanten die nu meepraten over participatie in deze nieuwe GTP klasse zijn: Toyota, Ford, Mclaren, Volkswagen groep, Ginetta, Oreca, Ferrari en Aston Martin.

      Die had ik ook gelezen Baksteen.
      In 2020 is de McLaren 720S aan pensioen toe. Dus een mooie reden om een nieuwe sportscar te ontwikkelen met GTP spec. Kan die gelijk ter beschikking worden gesteld voor klanten teams en een straat versie voor de gemiddelde rijke die toch niet weet wat hij met z`n geld moet doen.

      Ik ben vooral benieuwd naar wat Ferrari en Ford (Le Mans aartsvijanden) gaan introduceren als GTP.

      Als de auto's ook maar een beetje lijken op de hedendaagse hypercars dan kijk ik graag mee. Ik vond vroeger de Group C prachtige auto's. Wat McLaren met de Le Mans moet weet ik niet helemaal, maar ik vind ze vandaag de dag beter passen in de Indycars. Ik kijk met meer interesse naar het besluit van Ford en Aston Martin...
