Bourdais: "Alonso had het dit jaar lastiger gehad in Indy 500"

Fernando Alonso reed vorig jaar een sterke debuutrace tijdens de Indy 500, maar de Spanjaard zou het dit jaar een stuk lastiger hebben gehad. Dat stelt IndyCar-coureur Sebastien Bourdais. Het aerodynamische pakket van de auto's had een vuurdoop in 2018 een stuk lastiger gemaakt.

Toch kan Bourdais het doel van Alonso, het winnen van de 'Triple Crown', wel waarderen. "Niets dan lof voor Alonso", aldus Bourdais tegenover Motorsport.com. "Zijn poging op Le Mans en zijn debuut op Indy, het laat zien dat hij een echte motorsportliefhebber is en dat hij extra waarde hecht aan historie en de betekenis ervan. Dat siert hem."

De Fransman blijft van mening dat zijn debuut op Indy niet overdreven moet worden. "Alle Andretti-auto's kunnen daar winnen. Hij arriveerde in het perfecte jaar met een product dat doorontwikkeld en perfect in controle was."

"Bewijs hiervoor is mijn engineer Craig Hampson. Hij werkte voor Andretti en toen hij bij ons kwam, vernietigde dat al onze kennis, tot ik mezelf vernietigde en de muur raakte. Toen men ons aan zag komen, werd iedereen bang omdat we een raket gebouwd hadden."

Al met al was Bourdais niet onder de indruk van het Indy-debuut van Alonso. "Fernando weet hoe hij aan een stuur moet draaien en hij weet hoe hij zijn voet naar beneden moet doen. Nee, ik was niet verrast. Zijn auto was zo exceptioneel dat hij het bijna te gemakkelijk had."

"Ik denk dat als hij dit jaar teruggekeerd was, hij had gezien dat ovals erg indrukwekkend kunnen zijn. We hebben net nieuwe aerodynamica-pakketten en nu is niet alles meer vol gas. Zelfs tijdens de kwalificatie is het ingewikkeld."

Klinkt alsof een ervaren F1 coureur het alleen maar makkelijker had gehad als het niet meer alleen vol gas is.

Internationaal respect voor Alonso. En terecht. Hij bevestigd mijn mening dat Alonso in een goede wagen een winnaar is. Maar Alonso is geen Lecrerc, die rijft in een 2CV nog in de punten.

  Ik denk dat die conclusie over Alonso vs. Leclerc nog wat voorbarig is. Alonso heeft bewezen dat hij WK materiaal is, Leclerc komt net kijken in de F1 en moet dit nog wel even laten zien.
  Daarmee niet gezegd dat Leclerc een enorm talent is, die gaat nog mooie dingen laten zien. Doet hij nu al in de Sauber.

Bourdais had het anders destijds zelf knap lastig in de Formule 1, kan ik me herinneren. Werd het snot voor de ogen gereden door zijn teamgenoot Vettel en dat betekende het einde van zijn F1-carrière.
