Mercedes geeft Hamilton geen voorkeursbehandeling in Oostenrijk

De Mercedes-coureurs zijn vrij om tegen elkaar te racen in de Grand Prix van Oostenrijk. Teambaas Toto Wolff heeft tegenover ESPN bevestigd dat de regerend wereldkampioenen Lewis Hamilton geen voorkeursbehandeling gaat krijgen op de Red Bull Ring.

Het verschil in het kampioenschap tussen Valtteri Bottas en Hamilton is 53 punten in het voordeel van de regerend wereldkampioen. De Brit krijgt vandaag een mooie gelegenheid om uit te lopen, omdat rivaal Sebastian Vettel door een gridstraf slechts vanaf plek 6 mag starten. De huidige situatie in het kampioenschap speelt momenteel nog geen rol voor Wolff en Mercedes, die de coureurs gewoon vrij laat racen vandaag.

“We hebben intern al besproken”, vertelde Wolff. “Het is pas de negende race en we hebben nog een lange weg te gaan, dus we zijn het aan de fans verplicht om ze te laten racen. In juni of juli willen we het kampioenschap nog niet op die manier bekijken. Richting het laatste derde van het kampioenschap kan je je geld op één paard zetten, vooral als een van je coureurs in een mindere uitgangspositie zit. Op dit moment doe je dat nog niet.”

    Zo hoort het. Ze stevenen toch af op het constructeurskampioenschap. Maar als puntje bij paaltje komt vraag ik me af of deze pr-tekst nog stand houdt, ook in de eerste twee derden van het seizoen.

    Zal Lewis vandaag ook niet nodig hebben verwacht ik. Bottas zal hij waarschijnlijk zelf wel kunnen pakken.

    We gaan het zien over een paar minuutjes, gun Bottas wel een overwinning die heeft al behoorlijk veel pech gehad dit seizoen.

    Winst en verlies dichtbij... in bahrein dnf en nu met tikkie de held geworden. Typisch Max deze winst. Ric kwam te kort en dnf. Motorsport is soms hard.
    Merc voelt de druk. Weinig marge. Vorige keer Ocon en nu twee keer.
    Mooie race, vette gevechten.

    Dit is toch tegen de filosofie van Mercedes?? De coureurs zijn toch vrij om te racen bij Mercedes, zolang het Mercedes uitkomt dan wel natuurlijk wat een flapdrol is die Toto toch!!
