Timing in Q3 'net niet goed' bij Ferrari en Sebastian Vettel

Sebastian Vettel zag in een regenachtige Q3 een grote kans op pole position door zijn vingers glippen. Kampioenschapsrivaal Lewis Hamilton ging er met de eerste plaats vandoor en Vettel wijdt dat onder andere aan matige timing van hemzelf en Ferrari.

“We timeden het niet goed in Q3", analyseerde Vettel na de kwalificatie. "Kijkend naar de omstandigheden had het alle kanten op kunnen gaan. Ik denk dat we vandaag de snelheid hadden om voor pole te kunnen gaan, maar dat zullen we nooit weten. Natuurlijk was Q3 anders dan anders. Het gat naar Lewis was groot, dus hij verdiende de pole, maar ik weet vrij zeker dat we voor de race een goede snelheid hebben.”

“Er was wat verwarring, zeker als het ineens zo begint te regenen", vervolgt de Duitser van Ferrari. "Als team moet je twee auto’s managen en Kimi had wat haast om terug het circuit op te gaan. Nu schijnt het zonnetje weer en is het droog. Ik wist niet goed wat ik moest doen en ik had wat verkeer. Daarna droogde de baan op, maar wilde ik de banden een beetje sparen."

Ook lukte het Vettel niet om op het juiste moment de juiste ronde te rijden. "Met Esteban (Ocon, red.) voor me had ik wat verkeer. Je weet dat elk rondje hét rondje kan zijn, maar je weet ook dat hij aan het eind komt als het blijft opdrogen. Misschien was ik niet kalm genoeg in de auto, maar uiteindelijk ben ik blij met mijn tweede startplaats en de start op de eerste rij.”

Ik vraag me af welke timing dan, want Vettel zette als laatste zijn tijd neer op een opdrogende baan.

  Snap ik ook niet, de timing was eigenlijk perfect.
  Als laatse op een opdrogende baan is altijd het beste.
  Misschien waren z’n banden niet al te best meer...

  Hij deed 2 vliegende rondjes achter elkaar, waardoor hij mogelijk in het laatste rondje toen de baan beter was tekort kwam. Denk dat ie beter alles op dat rondje had kunnen zetten. Lewis deed dat (noodgedwongen) wel.

  k las elders dat Vettel zelf ook heeft gezegd zn laatste ronde vrijwel zonder power van de batterij heeft gereden. Dan kun je idd wel stellen dat de timing niet helemaal gelukkig was, maar achteraf is t altijd makkelijk praten.

  Vettel had voor zijn laatste run ook een vliegende ronde waardoor hij geen batterij kon sparen, dus zijn laatste run was zonder batterij. Dus als hij nog batterij had, had hij op pole gestaan ipv Ham. Daarom ook geen goede timing...

  Kijk het nog even terug zou ik zeggen, Vettel had gewoon vrij baan, er reed niemand voor hem, zeker niet waar hij last van had.
  Wat @Chris zegt, zou best een goede verklaring kunnen zijn.

  Vettel had gelijke kansen, dit heeft t.o.v. elkaar, niets met geluk te maken.
  Ze reden onder dezelfde baan condities, misschien had Vettel nog wel de betere.

Het team deed het ook niet handig bij de stop van Vettel voor inters. Vettel werd naar voren geduwd om ruimte te maken voor Raikonen die de box in moest waarbij de voorkant van de auto werd opgetild en de achterkant niet waarna de diffuser beschadigd raakte en Vettel over de radio zijn monteurs waarschuwd. Klassieke Italiaanse chaos..
