Perez: "Veel leren en proberen bij Kamui in de buurt te blijven"

Sergio Perez staat aan de vooravond van zijn debuutseizoen in de Formule 1. De Mexicaan is gecontracteerd door Sauber. De vice-kampioen uit de GP2 van 2010 verbindt zich niet aan concrete doelstellingen. Perez: "Deze week begint mij ontwikkeling."

Hij vervolgt: "Een droom komt uit, ik heb hier hard voor gewerkt. Op mijn vijftiende ben ik in mijn eentje naar Europa verhuisd met dit voor ogen. Ik heb offers gebracht. Nu ben ik hier en moet ik leren. Dat is het doel, zo snel mogelijk zo veel mogelijk opsteken."

"Ik hoop af en toe een mooi aantal punten te scoren en verder is het zaak om zo dicht mogelijk bij mijn teamgenoot Kamui Kobayashi in de buurt te blijven. Ik denk alleen aan nu, aan beginnen bij Sauber en niet aan de toekomst. Ik behoor dan wel tot de Ferrari Driver Academy en het is een droom om voor Ferrari te racen, maar dat is nu niet aan de orde."

"Het is mooi om de reacties vanuit Mexico te horen, iedereen is opgewonden over mijn aanwezigheid in de Formule 1. Mijn landgenoten volgen de sport nu meer. Dat motiveert enorm en maakt me trots. Het voelt niet als druk, het drijft me eerder en ik ben blij met de support."
